US President Barack Obama has signed into law a piece of legislation that extends the sanctions against Burma by one more year. The bill was signed by Obama on Aug. 10, days after both chambers of the US Congress—the US House of Representatives and the Senate—unanimously passed the Burma Freedom and Democracy Act. Before beginning its summer vacation, Congress has also authorized the use of the rotunda of the Capitol for the presentation of the Congressional Gold Medal to pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who will travel to the US in September.
