Burma will use a World Bank grant of more than US $80 million to establish “model villages†in over 300 townships across the country, according to China’s Xinhua news agency, citing official media reports on Wednesday. The World Bank announced its plan to provide the grant when it opened an office in Rangoon on Aug. 1. Pamela Cox, the bank’s vice president for East Asia and the Pacific, said at the time that Burma would also be eligible for interest-free loans from the International Development Association, the World Bank’s fund for the poorest countries, after it clears arrears of US $397 million.
