I find it disturbing, like they think they weren't going to make it? Like flying is sooo deadly you had better applaud your pilot? Seems we should be applauding ourselves every time we manage to cross a busy street in Thailand instead.

See what I mean?

There seems to be a very agitated mind-set about this in some people. I can't imagine why it might even ruffle a feather for anyone. But if you scan through the links that Rooo found they are crammed with responses like SBK's!

@ Gatorade.

3. Why do all Italian tourists feel it necessary to start clapping as soon as the aircraft has landed? On a little ATR

it can be disturbing but I guess that on a charter 747 the noise would be unimagineable.

Never thought about clapping after landing would be pointed towards a specific country.

We used to do it a lot here in scandinavia.

In general it seems like it's travellers 40+ that still claps after landing.

I remember when i was a kid, almost the whole plane would clap after landing on let's say Mallorca or ibiza, and so did i ;)

Why?

No idea.

But here it's normally only on long flights that clapping happens.

On domestic flights i never heard anyone clap after landing, so maybe it's more frequent at charter flights?

Can't see what the fuzz is about anyway.

People are happy to land safely on their destination and so they want to share their happiness by clapping.

It could be aimed towards the pilots and crew for their good work?

Could be the booze clapping?

Could be nervous passengers clapping cause they still are alive?

Could be people just beeing happy to arrive at their dream destination fullfilled with hope?

It's not like clappers are going to ruin your holiday, so share their happiness and enjoy your safe landings where ever you might end up in your future.

:D

i am not going to go postal or anything, I just think its an overreaction. Far more dangerous things in life these days than flying and sure, if it was a hairy flight or a scary landing and the pilot did a great job I would probably clap too. But a routine flight? Why?

Is any flight into Samui routine? Accident, incidents of planes skidding on landing, over running, i'd say makes it somewhat less than routine! Not that i have a problem flying mind, i just think its far from the finished article

I agree. As a pilot I would find it unnerving that the walk on freight should find it necessary to start clapping on landing, after a routine

flight.

Why don't the clappers get going after a successful take off?

Nice quote from a Pilot referring to passengers as walk on freight but I suppose what can we expect from a glorified Taxi driver's.

"2. The newspapers published photos of the PM in military uniform bedecked with loads of medal ribbons.

Whilst I undersdtand that the uniform is of an "honourary" nature does the same apply for medals?

I thought that they were awarded for achievements, bravery in battle etc and it does look with the

number of awards, that she has been a very brave lady or made significant and improved changes to

the Thai way of life. Would really like to know what they are all for."

See below photograph of a former world leader who was also decorated with medals for his acheivements, bravery in battle, and selfless service to his country.

^ I think it tells you what, but not why.

And she got a boy scout medal?? For what?

There wasn't a badge for shopping when I was in the scouts...

Back to the clapping, I can never tell if it's because they are happy to start the holiday or are just glad to have survived the flight.

I don't like it, it's creepy.

I keep expecting to see firetrucks and ambulances outside and to be told that a stewardess and a little blind boy on his way for a heart transplant landed the plane after both pilots ate the fish.....

necronx99 there are actually 6 boy scout medals. You can see the full list on this link http://www.mof.go.th/home/mofhistory/sort.htm

Here's a bit more info for those asking about civil servant uniforms.

Thai public servants have their own uniforms. The general use uniform is drab or khaki. Other more formal uniforms are worn for special occasions. This link to the MoPh site (all in Thai language) shows the differing types of uniforms and insignia. http://person.ddc.moph.go.th/organize/eval/index14_eval.html#a

Not all public servants wear uniform. Up until the formation of the new government many civil servants wore civilian clothes to work. The clothing generally matched the colours of the week. Soon after the new government was installed a directive was issued to some departments that government uniform was to be worn on Mondays.

Rank insignia indicate the grade or level of the wearer. Examples of Royal Thai Orders and Decorations can be found on this link http://www.cabinet.thaigov.go.th/eng/d_menu21.htm

Most towns and cities have specialised shops selling uniforms and associated decorations and insignia. The medal ribbons you see usually match the person’s grade. They show decorations awarded over the time period that person has been in service. Other medals are commemorative or awarded for service. These are awarded to the person in the form of a certificate. That person then has to purchase the actual medal/award from the specialty shops. Infact anyone can purchase the items.

Service ribbons on uniforms seem to cover some really basic achievements. The family picture of Yingluk and Pipe (?) shows the kid with a chestful, leading me to think the first must be for completion of toilet training, others for similar outstanding performance.

Police have a different set. It was once suggested to me that the one with successive red and yellow vertical stripes was for the Great Pattaya Clap Epidemic, but it could have been said in jest.

As to why Italians applaud on landing, book a few flights with Alitalia and this will become obvious. If you think Italians are happy landers, try traveling with Russians. I once was a frequent flyer with Olympic, but never achieved enough points to get the service ribbon for my uniform.

Do the taxi drivers at arrivals clap their hands with glee as well?
