Bangkok Hospital Samui

Recommended Posts

Well folks -this hospital has the reputation of being the best on the island. But........

Take a wad of cash if you want treatment.

Recently, my neighbour asked me to take her to BHS as she was unwell. We arrived approx 8 pm.

The doctor saw her within 30 minutes.

We then waited 90 minutes for 'something to happen'.

During this time - I explained to the nurse that there were 9 cases of dengue fever within 20 meters of her house. Maybe this was the problem.

My neighbour had a fever - we asked that she be moved from underneath the a/c vent. The nurse replied that someone would come to do this. They never did.

We asked for a glass of water. The nurse said that she would get one. She never did.

After 90 minutes, an administrater arrived and said that as my neighbour was receiving treatment - we had to pay 80% of the estimate until the insurance kicked in.

I explained that for the time that we had been there - there had been no treatment. The administrator asked if the doctor had looked at the patient. I said that he had, but that we had received no treatment and no diagnosis.

I was advised that the patient had food poisoning and that I had to pay 28,000 baht. This being 80% of the estimated cost. I went to the ATM across the road and withdrew the money. Duly paid and my neighbour was 'checked in'.

The next day - we are informed that my neighbour had dengue fever. (Surprise!)

From this point on until check-out, the treatment was very good.

On day two - the insurance kicked in and I was informed that I would get my 28,000 baht back. The insurance company (Visa Premium) had agreed in writing to pay ALL costs.

Everything went well until, 7 days later, it as time to 'check out'.

Doctor says 'you can leave now'. (9 am)

Admin says' you cannot leave until the final bill is paid'.

Three hours later, my neighbour is very agitated at being held to ransome. So I go to the hospital.

We decide to check out and see what happens.

We go to the insurance department and say 'we are going'.

They say OK we have your 28,000 baht to cover today - you can get it back when we receive payment for today. (Does this sound familier?)

We leave - my neighbour is happy and I am 28,000 baht light.

So - if you have a heart attack - do NOT go to BHS unless you have a wad of cash in your pocket. (80% of the estimated cost.) Otherwise, you may be lying on the gurney while they try ad get you to sign something before you expire.

I am sure that some of you will decry my post and tell me what great treatment you had at BHS. But - did you have to give cash/credit card first?

There is a law in Thailand that states that all people have the right to emergency treatment at any hospital. There is an A4 sized charter in the insurance room that confirms this. However, in reality - pay first - everything else later. The taxi scams are minor compared to this one. We are talking lives here.

7 day stay !, at 28 K a day Min !, i am surprised the insurance paid out, as most Dengue fever suffers dont need hospital treatment and bed rest is the best cure ( although if very dehydrated, then yes , but not 7 days ) - http://www.bupa.co.uk/individuals/health-information/directory/d/dengue-fever

BHS really does like to keep people is as long as they can !, much the opposite of the NHS whistling.gif

Three days intensive care. Suspected severe chest infection. Given oxygen through the nose.Bill 98K. On the way out the suggested I see Ear nose throat specialist, conclusion? Sinus infection. In the charges they had 37K for oxygen, which I couldn't breathe.

Yeah spot on they are.

I hope you got the cute ICU nurse Rooo....she was luvverly! smile.png

Oxygen is expensive commodity in a hospital....but questionable if you needed a bed in ICU with a sinus infection.

That is the trouble....you pay for treatment received rather than required.

Misdiagnosis Smokie, had to pay extra on the way out to see the ear nose specialist.

This is a small proceedure I had today in BHS,

The Doctor did a great job, I was seen quickly but don't do what I did !

I refused the anesthetic to save 1100 baht, play the link with loud audio and and you can hear the occasional wince.

If your sqeemish don't watch.

forgot to Mention it but The Doc emptied 3 of them Edited by premiersportsbar

When I had dengue I decided money would be better spent on a holiday instead of hospital so I flew my family to KL and I sweat it out in a hotel room

while they went shopping for those hard to find items on Samui lol!

A bottle of Oxygen, even medical oxygen, is just a couple of hundred baht and has plenty of liters in it.

They are just money making tools that hospital\

i got dianostic with dengy fever without even a blood test. the doctor said he could tell from loooking at me.????? but they were happy to ask mefoe 50,000 baht for 3 nights of treatment. i though i might have had food poisoning and was ina bad way

anywayi did not trust the doctor with his method of diagnisis or those prices so some how i managed to make it to samuihospital in chaweng.

they took a blood sample then gave me the option. treated there or take meds andgo home. by the way i had food poisoning. they advised me to stay there so i too theadvise as the price was a hell of allot cheaper than BBK samui plus they has the correct dignisis

Give a price for your small procedure then we will know for sure what a rip off they might be.

My son (13 months) cut his hand today and needed stitches.

Got quoted 9 thousand baht for three stitches. sick.gif

Went to Nathon and got it free.

They were special stitches to make his hand bionic.

Not Samui related but, I took my son to a private hospital when he was 2 because he was swelling up very bad. I suspected he just needed an anti-histamine, but wanted to be sure because it was bad. The first question the nurse asked was do we want to book a room for the night. No, I want you to tell me what is wrong with my son. The nurse then proceeded to scare monger without doing anything until I screamed at the nurse to do something now!

End result was we booked in for the night and all he needed was an anti-histamine. They gave him an injection ('Sir you must leave while we give the injection.' ' Not happening, just give him the injection') and afterwards the care for him was first class.

I know hospitals are a business, but some of them here are just evil, scare mongering vultures.

Sounds like a perfect description of Bangkok Samui Hosital. Heartless, immoral vultures.

sometimes i wonder if it would be cheaper to weigh ina private doctor on a monthly wage than go into these places.i am sure a doctor would rarther have money in his pocket than money with the compnay business for a bedroom that he gets nothing out of neither does the patient appart from hotel service but that is problamby just to calme one down about the big bill they have had. maybe booking the room is for observation in case one drops down with a hart attack due to extorition prices.

May be I am the only one who never had a bad experience there, neither with myself, my family or my guests. As long as you have insurance I don't see any reason to complain.

Thai Inter would be my next choice and before I go to Samui Inter, Nathon or god forbid Bandon, I rather fly to BKK.

Sure its a business, sure prices are steep but compared to a private hospital in Europe, they charge peanuts here......

Yes its a nice hospital and theres a nice view from the window. You can also get free coffee in the reception are which is not bad at all. However their sole agenda is basically to charge you as much money as they can with no limits as to how ridiculous their charges might and i for one wouldn't be surprised in health insurance companies start to blacklist them.

If they did i wouldn't blame them and i'm amazed this hasn't happened already.

My neighbour DID have insurance - the 'check-in and check-out' service was almost criminal'.

After they came up with the correct diagnosis - the treatment was very good.

I totally agree with your analysis here as to which hospitals to avoid.
