John Terry has sensationally quit England less than 24 hours before the Football Association hearing into the Anton Ferdinand saga is expected to begin.

Chelsea captain Terry announced his immediate retirement from international football, accusing the FA of making his position "untenable".

The 31-year-old said in a statement: "I am today announcing my retirement from international football. I would like to thank the England managers who have selected me for my 78 caps. I have had great pleasure in sharing that honour with all the players that I've played with."

He added: "I would like to thank them, the fans and my family for their support and encouragement during my international career. Representing and captaining my country is what I dreamed of as a boy and it has been a truly great honour.

"I have always given my all and it breaks my heart to make this decision. I want to wish Roy [Hodgson] and the team every success for the future.

"I am making this statement today in advance of the hearing of the FA disciplinary charge because I feel the FA, in pursuing charges against me where I have already been cleared in a court of law, have made my position with the national team untenable.

"I now look forward to playing for Chelsea FC, and challenging for domestic and European honours, and I want to thank the fans and the club for their continued support."

Press Association Sport understands the hearing into claims Terry used a racist slur against QPR defender Ferdinand was scheduled to begin on Monday.

Terry denies the charge and has vowed to clear his name once and for all after being found not guilty of a racially-aggravated public order offence at Westminster Magistrates Court in July.

A guilty verdict over what is a similar offence under FA rules would have put pressure on the game's governing body to prevent Terry playing for England, having already stripped him of the England captaincy while he awaited trial. But the defender

has taken that decision out of their hands, ending his nine-year international career himself.

Yes, I remember all the stunning performances I've witnessed from the England team during his tenure. All those European Nations and World Cup successes.

What on earth will we do without the loutish, cretinous, racist wanke_r?

Usual financial fat-cat trick of quitting before youre fired.

Anybody know the nuances of what is different about the FA and previous charges before the court. Surely the FA dont feel they are better placed to judge a non-football matter (racist accusation) than a court of the land?ermm.gif

99.5% conviction rate on the balance of probabilities. ask luis suarez.

and you're quite right, he's jumping before he's pushed. though he may have had a little nod to go outside with a revolver by certain vested interest sorts at the FA.

RYAN SHAWCROSS

FOR: TURNED down an approach from Wales last month to wait for England — so he is obviously keen.

Has been a key part of the Stoke success story in the last few years and, standing at 6ft 3in, he is an imposing presence for any striker. Could be worth a shout.

AGAINST: YET to make his international bow at the age of 24 — despite repeated calls from his manager and team-mates at the Britannia.

His no-nonsense, all-action approach has worked well for Stoke — but is he really cultured enough for international football?

AGAINST he's slow, can't turn and talentless. He should get the call from Royston by the weekend then...

That he can. Thing is, i really do think that the Ramsey leg break was unintentional. Shawcross was just hopelessly slow. can you imagine the big lad Ryan, 2014 world cup, lunging in for a challenge on the likes of Neymar or other such pacey quick turning forwards. It'll be carnage! whistling.gif

Whats the point in playing players that would be in their mid thirties by the next world cup? Its about time we played players that will be young enough to play in the next tournament isn't it?

Yes I agree. You have a good chance of making it through the playoffs. -_-

I'm all for playing the younger players, but why just quote the Chelsea players using detrimental language and not mention any of the other over 30's?

Personally in preparation for the next w/c I would pick the the squad on potential by 2014, not necessarily the best 11 today. Give the squad more time to gel and stop playing like a bunch of strangers.

Maybe John Terry deserves some of the comments made on this thread, but a Witch Hunt by the FA was not the way to get rid of him. He was cleared by the Courts, for the Alledged Racialist Remark,so why does the FA not accept the verdict? seems like they think they are above the law of England. A poor day for Justice! and disgraceful behaviour by the FA.

Please delete this off topic rant mrboj. Thanks. :P

Remember what Jacquet did when he was appointed as France manager: He told the French FA that he was picking the best youngsters to work together towards France 98, and that they could write off Euro 96 before it even started. Amazingly he still qualified although they didn't do that well.

but by 98 they were good enough to win the World Cup and the subsequent Euros.

I'm not saying we should start from scratch but really, getting shot of the dinosaurs who are all up their own <deleted> should have been first thing on the agenda.

A fine of £ 220,000 will hardly sent him to the poor house. Half the number of match bans that Luiz Suarez got. It would be interesting to hear what Liverpool think.
