Are Us Men In Thailand Different From Other Men At Home?

This really applies to any country but as we are in Thailand i address it to us .

Are we different ,more adventurous? every time i go home i see old friends that have, well grown old,are we a different breed us men who pack up and live a life of adventure ,some getting married and having children in their 60'S,to be honest many seem to take on a new lease of life and seem healthier than the "old" guys who just eek out a living in their homes worrying how they are going to heat them and not having transport because of the cost.

I really dont include the married guys in this as they can hardly up sticks ,but just the single ones .

what do you think boys?

'Back Home' where I come from it's going to be winter soon, just like here, but the difference is my relations will be racking up the central heating and worrying about the huge bills that will follow, whilst I will be sitting on my terrace sipping cool beer and feeling very jolly eating my Christmas dinner 'al fresco' as I laugh inwardly at how ridiculously cheap my power bills are.

Am I adventurous? Well; not really in the sense that I want to go Mountain climbing, Pot holing, Deep Sea diving, Et al. I like to ride my Bike every day and chat with the village locals, which is adventurous enough for me, but I know that's not enough for everyone. All depends on what people want for themselves when retired.

I used to climb mountains for thrills. On one such adventure I had a very near death experience-it was a wake up call that life is very very sweet but also fleeting. I turned away from being the good husband, family man, competent professional and fled the so called comforts of the developed world. Here I found myself and I have never been happier. Life is still as adventurous and sometimes dangerous, but its the kind of life I choose, not the kind of life I have had imposed. I dont feel different from anyone "back home" so much as different for having the intestinal fortitude to shake the inertia and make a life change. However they seem to have aged more quickly and to have slowed down more than me-natural selection or natural environment?-I dont know, but I know for sure that I would rather get eaten by the last tiger in Khao Yai, than die of boredom.

I came from Florida so the weather is the same and a lot of old Brits running around with speedos on the beach. The Canadians men came down for the weather and to buy used cars. Flew down and drove back. The town I lived in had 8 women to every one man. A lot like Pattaya except the women had blue hair. The men didn't smile as much and drank a bit more.

More men at AA meetings. There was an AA meeting every 10 minutes 24 hours a day. And a lot of psychiatrists. I believe a lot more Prozac and a lot less Viagra were sold.

Kind of like the difference between Thai Visa readers and Stickman readers.

My impression to a T. The American dream was a nightmare for me. I fled after 2 weeks. I am a source of amusement to my Thai relatives and friends whenever I raise my eyes to the heavens and exclaim in exasperation, "Thailand." They know full well that I love it here - and them.

It takes a certain amount of ooomph to be an expat.

We certainly are different to the ones left behind, but then also the difference between the ones here is also vast.

More adventurous, more daring, more willing to try new things, take risks, explore and accept other things and people much more.

Well I am half the age of most here so not sure if i qualify but it seems like you guys are smart for realizing how much better your life is here because of all the poverty and desperation and lack of opportunity for a large percentage of Thai people, but you guys can also be annoying because you take so much pride in having won the birth lottery and can be a bit of a braggart. at some point it's like, do want a medal for getting on a plane and coming here or what? too many handsum mans can go to ur head.

is this really the case? seems like most come here, quickly get a live in sleeping dictionary and then settle into a life of going back and forth from the bar/shopping center and drinking themselves to death with the occasional TV post here and there. j/k

Wow the last three posters are a little negative ,and most of the men i know here just laugh at the hansom man thing ,we know what we are ,but dont you think that at the last chapter of ones life its not an adventurous thing to do ,to give up all you have ever known to take a leap into another life?

You need to be at least a little adventurous to be an expat to begin with. Being an Expat also gives a little freedom from your own culture, most Farang in Thailand are less restricted by laws and expectations than they would be if living in a Western country. Thais tend to assume what ever we do is odd or different so we can make more stuff up as we go along. For some that can be adventurous, depending on a persons inclinations?

Some people come here to try to get away from something, others come here to try and find something.I used to feel misplaced in a lot of places i used to live in(different countries).Been in Thailand for nearly ten years now and i feel i am finally at home.

being in a disease prone area of Thailand I feel like I'm coming down with something undiagnosed. But i have chronic fatigue and worry I have parasites in my intestines eating all my nutrients making me tired all the time. Any rare parasites that meds cant rid people of in thailand?

Dunno about the OP (no disrespect) -for sure there is a fair amount of larger than life characters here, I have unfortunately seen a fair amount of smaller than life characters also, trotting along behind their young wives in BigC and avoiding eye contact. Invested all their money in a house and then told that they can be thrown out at any time.

Let's not talk about the characters in Nana Plaza and Pattaya.

...yes, but they came to save on heating bills and because of their adventurous nature.

I dont think it's a bad thing that people want to change. The thing that gets me with men moving to Thailand is that they seem to leave there commonsense and honesty in their home country plus try to change and become something they never could be or indeed were. For example:- men who claim to be SAS, Navy Seals or other ex special forces, Men who cant seem to tell the truth, men who suddenly claim to be zil, lionaires living on a basic budget, men who think they have turned into male models that the ladies cant resist, Men who claim to be airline pilots, men who are quite young claiming to have retired.Chaps, all I can say is that if you fit the above or another category of which there are many, you make yourselves look like complete tossers, don't do it and be true to yourself. If you were a builder, say that, if you cleaned toilets, then that's OK too.Don't sell yourself short and if your mate is being a cock, tell him, he may not know how stupid he looks!

I love the kind of people you have identified. They provide entertainment without charge and the more time you spend talking with them, the more elaborate becomes their framework of lies. Enjoy yourself by asking them detailed and probing questions, in a modest and reverential way of course and only when there's plenty of company. Others categories include people who worked for MI6 and who are forbidden from discussing it and stocks and shares traders for Bank Belgique!

Its like this, as you get older you may not necessarily know what you want, but you sure as hell know what you dont want ! and most of the things you dont want are usually in your place of origin which is why you are here (in Thailand) and because you had the balls, confidence and experience to do something about it.

Real unemployment in the US is close to 20% and it is 0% in Thailand. The dollar and the pound have both crashed and the Thai Baht is going up and up and up. I moved my money and business here 10 years ago because of the positive economic climate of Thailand as opposed to the negative economic climate of the West. A lot of the guys here are 26 so that makes you 13 years of age. That makes sense.smile.png

It is only a problem if your clothes are hand washed. I had the same thing years ago in Vietnam.smile.png

God i must lead such a sheltered life ,i read about these charectors in books and on here ,but have never ever met anyone who has claimed these things , i know a builder , a bus driver and guys from other assorted proffesions ,a copper but no one who has ever been a navy seal or an ex sas fighter .

why dont i meet them? also i dont know (although i have seen old guys with young women ,but they are usually tourists with bar girls) any guys who are married and do as they are told by young wives ,most of the men i know are married to women in their thirties and fortys and believe me are very switched on.

Having grown up on baseball, I think we scratch ourselves more in inappropriate places...

Oops, mis-read the OP's intent. Thought he was comparing US guys' behavior in our homes with behavior of other guys who live in Thailand.

As for comparing myself with the guys who stay in the USA, I just come a longer way to pick up a bigger paycheck than I would back home. Nothing heroic or adventurous about that in my mind. I did the same thing all over the USA before coming to Asia 13 years ago. The decision would have been a more difficult one if I had to consider a wife and family.

While I don't consider Thailand a hardship posting, if they started mailing my paycheck to the USA, I'd collect it there...and be no sadder for it.
