Razali Ismail, the former United Nations special envoy to Burma, has called on the country to grant citizenship to the Rohingya Muslim minority. “I’m very partial towards Myanmar but they need to accept the hard truth that the Rohingya have been there for such a long time that they deserve to be recognized as citizens,†Razali said in an interview with the Malaysian daily The New Straits Times. He added, however, that it was difficult for Burmese leaders, including Aung San Suu Kyi, to take a strong stance on the issue because of widespread public opposition to accepting the Rohingya.
