Dont worry about the legal aspect of sidecar,

too many thais depend on it for their livelihood for it to become a ban,

and too many appreciate them things bringing fruit/food etc too.

You'll have no problem during your lifetime, so why bother ?

It might be illegal but accepted, but I think that is usually for Thai's, not farang. And the fact that there are many on the road, so it must be allright is also for Thai's. If they have an accident, they just scoot across the rice paddy, and go back home, no worries, but for farang, you will have to face the music alone. Driving in Thailand is dangerous enough, without adding to the problems, by driving an illegal bike? I would guess, that as far as tea money, you would be a perfect target.

You can also get the Stallion Buddy with a sidecar and be 100% legal. The motorcycle + sidecar is registered as a 3-wheel vehicle so you cannot disconnect the sidecar...

Been riding a Honda Dream (125 cc) with a hand-made side car for three years now. It took me everywhere, from Satun to Mae Hong Son. Never had a single problem with police. They occasionally stopped me just to take a look at the bike and laugh about the crazy farang-me. It's not easy to drive the thing - especially uphill - but it's extremely practical and fun and it attracts a lot of smiles and goodwill from the locals. Here's part of my salenging-around-Thailand story. http://thailander.eu/.
