thenervoussurgeon
Come on tell the truth ,for me it was the fact if we stayed in Britain i would have had to work till i dropped to keep up the lifestyle and because of all the rules and regulations , I was born at a time when we were free to live our lives without interferance in every walk of life ,and now you. MJP
Same as that really. The UK isn't much fun for working people. Also house prices. Also that UK immigration put up such a fight to stop wife and daughter going to the UK, even temporarily. Back here [uK] now and it's even more aggravation than ever.

DocN
I just lost a job back home and always wanted to work abroad. Since I just had turned 40, it was a "now or never"- decission. I work in tourism, have been to Thailand before (many times) on holiday and was interested in a new and different culture. Hell....I sure got that! Popular Post Pormax
I too got fed up of the UK. Had my own business for 22 years. Got divorced (wife's choice). Could not see why I needed to work hard only for the tax man to take the bulk of the money I earnt and then spend it unwisely. Loved a hot climate after serving 5 years of my 15 in Cyprus so left the aweful weather in the UK to live there. Was ok there, lovely place, but was there alone. Started to spend 4 -6 months in Thailand and loved it, so after 5 years moved here.

StreetCowboy
I rather die than freeze any more I don't know what part of the country you come from, but I found the weather in England to be generally pleasantly mild, so long as your windows and doors were properly sealed and double-glazed, and you wore a good woolen coat when going out in winter, You can't all have lived in Stornaway, surely? Cheers If your current job takes you around the globe, then you could do that from Thailand just as well, perhaps. If you export a lot to Thailand, or produce a lot in Thailand, then if your skills are in short supply here, or if you are a highly trusted senior member of your organisation, there may be a job for you. If you work on the internet, you could perhaps try to avoid the long arm of the law and work here without a work permit. SC

Popular Post NeverSure
Straightforward answer. 1. I have no relatives here in the US that I give a dmn about. My two grown children do too many drugs and too much booze and try to mooch off me. Screw that. Only my father who I love is 95 and his heart is failing. 2. I hate the liberated attitude of Western (at least US) women. They don't really want to be equals. They want equality so they say, but then they still want me to take care of them. I can't stand them. 3. Climate. 4. Living costs, even though I can afford the US. 5. Ever increasing oppressive government. 6. Mostly I just want to leave this life behind and go somewhere else, and my favorite place is Thailand. 7. I'm a loner and I live off my computer. Don't expect to find me in a condo in BKK spending most of my time in bars or with bar girls. I will set up in a rented condo in Chiang Mai only long enough to find a decent sized village with good internet access and not more than about 30km from a bigger town, get all of my licenses and visa etc., and then I'll be living more like the natives and hope to be part of the village. I'll break the law and teach English for free for the social aspect, to help kids, and to further become part of the village. 8. I'm going to hire a Thai lawyer and see if it's possible for me to lease land for 30 years and build a small house on it. 9. I'm going to improve my Thai to where I can at least get basic ideas across, and understand the same. 10. I may never be heard from again, LOL.

Ausladyinpatong
I think for me the initial attraction was the feeling of freedom, the tropical climate vs long, cold, grey Melbourne winters and the fact that at the time there was plenty of work available, not particularly high paying work but I was young and single and the money I could earn was enough for a cheap but very cheerful lifestyle. I had a blast! Now of course that "feeling of freedon" has mostly faded and been replaced with feelings of irritation at the lack of order everywhere I look, mostly on the roads...I think I'm just getting old and grumpy and probably after just a week of the real world I'd be craving the "freedom" again....and of course I wouldn't ever want to go back to those long winters but I do enjoy the cooler days/nights we've been experiencing of late.
