How does anyone need advice on how to NOT drink and drive. He will have come from a country that does not allow it if he is from the west. He caused damage to peoples property so why do people feel he needs advice .

Why would anyone feel sorry for him .In my opinion it will not be the first time he as done this pay the price ,he as no thought for other people .

I don't feel sorry for him, but I will give advice.

You may have missed the obvious, but all of it applies equally to you if/when you get into some accident. Even when you're as sober as a goat.

At least he didn't weasel out on the forum by omitting the drinking part, or going the 'my friend' route.

You forgot to mention the important point of no insurance.I have had 2 accidents both fully covered by insurance.Thank you for the not needed advice .

How do you get a 'full coverage' insurance for a second hand scooter?

The hospital are going to bend you over and without lubrication F%@#k you!

You have have one way or the other been given all the advice you need, I would be concentrating on getting the hospital bill sorted out, the bird in the billing department has already 'given away' the fact that you can get 20k knocked off.

She is obviously looking for a 'drink' (excuse the pun) play the game with her, perhaps mention the fact that you contracted Pneumonia whilst in the hospital and that you believe the hospital is responsible for that therefore the 10k a night ICU should also be 'lost' be careful not to aggravate the situation, attempt to use her to get the bill down to an acceptable amount, negotiate with her, perhaps offer her 50% of what you save!

If they have your passport and the circumstances are right try and ask for it back on the grounds that you have to do a 'visa run' pointing out that if you do not/cannot do the run you will be liable for deportation (although they might contact immigration and supply them with a certificate stating that you are unable to do the 'visa runs') and then they will not get any money, not to sure if I personally would take that route, but I am not in your position!

Just food for thought, look on the bright side, if it all 'pans out' you might even get to shag the bird from billing! whistling.gif

Good luck, I think you are going to need it!

I know "the girl" she is just an under paid translator. single mom. And I don't think I have ever seen her drink

In my 10 + year in Thailand I have been to hospitals in BKK, Pattaya, CM, as well as a few others. I have never been asked for my passport nor even ID card. And I have always gotten good service that I was happy to pay for

Things have changed. Too many farangs in the Kingdom these days with no money and doing runners on hospital bills. They are tired of losing money and want to be assured they will be paid. Can you blame them?

They would only be losing money if all their beds were full with a waiting list.

Most patients cost a hospital almost nothing extra.

I think you mean 'not making the excess profits they were hoping for'

It's not the same as shop-lifting.

If you cannot afford to pay for the damages, how are you going to afford a lawyer?

My advice is in one word: RUN!

He can't run as he has broken his femur. If you don't know what the femur is, it is the upper part of the leg.

Well however you look at it is fine. But the fact is, that these are 'for-profit corporations' (with shareholders); not charities.

I was visiting a friend at Suan Dok a few months ago when all of a sudden there was some confusion and shouting and then 2 security guards went running down the hall. My friend asked the Nurse what was going on and she told her that a hill-tribe woman had gotten out of bed and done a runner without paying. Hospitals want to be paid.

No I didn't. I mentioned insurance in my posts #24, #27 and #40.

In my reply above I stuck with the drinking part as that was whas the thing you highlighted in the post I responded to (#50), as being the main thing why someone would not deserve (need) advice.

This is an expat forum. It exists to give advice to others. Of course you are free to just move along if you don't feel like helping a person for any reason, valid as it may be.

How do they know you were drunk? You might have been mistaken, did someone do a blood test?

Never admit to anything.

10k a night for ICU is way over the top, sounds like RAM (already twice as much as everyone else) foreigner double pricing.

Was your bike untaxed?, you need insurance to buy tax, not good insurance but every little helps (should pay 15k towards hospital bill and the car/wall).

RAM does not double-price foreigners. Thais and foreigners pay the same.

Rachavej does, for some bill items.

Spend some time vetting the bill before final negotiations.

RAM wants to be paid twice as much by white people (and their wife/gf/kids)!

Drug dealers, pimps and loan sharks also want to be paid, that doesn't make it right.

From what I hear, the hospital will hold your passport until you have made payment. You will not be able to to leave the hospital let alone the country until their bill has been paid. Like "Winnie" said, this is the time to smile and negotiate the best you can. Keep this between you and the car owner as bringing in lawyer will only bring in the law, which will literally add insult to injury.

Good Luck

I think he can leave the hospital, but they will keep his passport until the bill is paid.

why would anybody hand over his/her passport to a hospital?

As security that he will return to pay his bill. otherwise the guys in the really really tight shirts will make sure he doesn't leave the hospital. all the while, racking up longer stay charges...

Like I said in the other thread, my friend in BKK was discharged from the hospital escorted by 2 guys in a luxury mini-van who stayed with him for two days driving him around BKK to borrow money, etc. (even sleeping out in front of his house in the hospital van) until he paid the 75K THB balance of his bill (and the hospital kept his passport until he paid). He didn't put up an argument over the passport as he was having a heart attack at the time!

So Im still in the hospital, cause while I was here I contracted Pneumonia somehow. A day before they were expecting to discharge me, I started coughing up blood and had a very hard time breathing.

Doctor says that there was a complication while trying to put down a tube down my airway after I was put under just before surgery, and that might have been the cause.

However I dont think they are willing to take the blame because they say that normally if something like this happens you only get it on the right lung, and I have it on both, which also has them perplexed.

Around the time that I could have been discharged, by bill was 70-80k, but as they found out I had acute pneumonia because I was coughing up blood, they moved me to the ICU for two nights. Im now in a normal ward and my bill WITH a 15% discount, cuz Ive already tried to negotiate it down is gonna be about 110-115k.

The english coordinator says I could try writing a latter to the director of the hospital. I've been wanting to get discharged for the two days now, but the doctors have been insisting that I still stay as the infection is lower in my lungs now but oxygenation level is only about 92%.

I think they are expecting me to be able to leave today or tomorrow.

I guess I should just go ahead and try and negotiate the price down furthur via a letter to the director? Cant be any harm in that.

lol. just msged the car owner. he says damages on the Honda Jazz will be around 130k. FML!

No surprise there. biggrin.png Do you have a Thai friend who can communicate/negotiate with the owner of the car? That is obviously a heavily marked up damage estimate. Did they say that they went to a Honda dealer? They will rightfully want the repairs done by a good body shop so you should be entitled to at least 2 estimates.

IMHO I don't think you will get very far with the letter to the Chief of Staff or Director of the Hospital. I think you should continue your best negotiating skills directly with the billing department. Being a layman, you don't really know the exact details concerning the insertion of the airway tube and don't think you could make a case on your own that they made a mistake which caused you to contract pneumonia. That case would have to be made by an expert. It may backfire on you.

OP, good luck with this situation.

Ive been msging with car owner. He sent me some pics.

Says they haven't started fixing the car yet, which seems weird to me. He's waiting for money from me I guess?

I really want to be at this mechanics place with a Thai person when this payment is gonna take place.

Edit: just found out car owner does not have insurance, the 130k appraisal was done at a Honda dealer

Your joking right.. that is a major impact on the car. I would not think a small bike could make that much damage. It looks similar to my jazz when we hit a concrete wall at 70/80 km hrs (ok ours was a bit worse) We had over 600k damages and it was total.

I wish you good luck and hope the owner of the car gets his money one way or the other. Even if you have to stay in jail till you pay up. He should not suffer for your mistakes.

I hope all the people on here with their holier than thou attitude remember their remarks on here if they ever make a mistake and ask for advice. Karma has a strange way of biting you on the arse.

T, you took the words right out of my mouth. The guy admitted he was at fault and wants to settle the damages as best he can. Hope he finds a way to make fair restitution.

I can't figure out how a scooter collision could cause that much damage, I expected perhaps a large dent and paint scrapes. But looking at the damage, the appraisal is nearly spot on based on my own experience and similar damage when a MC jumped a red light in front of me. My repair was covered by insurance and at the top Honda repair center. Somchai shop could do it cheaper but you probably have no option to select where as he will want it looking as good as before.

BTW, that's about a 2-3 month job to repair so look out for charges of not being able to use the car and missing work.

I think the dent on the rear side of the car is where he hit it with the scooter and the destruction on the front of the car is where it lost control and hit the restaurant

You'd expect that going to a Honda dealer. I think the main thing will be if you get it done at a Honda dealer or another shop. Perhaps negotiate for using genuine Honda parts, but have it done at another (but reputable) company?

Since you have the pictures, I would run around some good shops and get estimates.

Looking at the damage and based upon Tywais own experience, you may indeed have to bite the bullet on this one, OP. Between the car repairs, restaurant, and your hospital bill, you are going to be indebted to these people for a good 200K THB if not more. I do think you will be able to get the hospital bill down, however.

I think this will be an expensive lesson to you. And I know it is meaningless now, but motorcycle insurance is very, very cheap and I believe our m/c policy pays up to 200,000 THB in property damage to the other party. (That would cover your situation and then some). I don't recall how much per year it is, but it is so cheap that the g/f's brother picks up the tab each year and refuses to be reimbursed - and he is tight with his money!
