Hi,

Any and all advice welcomed.

I am organised to arrive in Chiang Mai with correct funds etc in place - relevant Thai Bank Book etc.

Will hope to immediately convert a 30 day tourist Visa to a 90 day O visa with intent to then extend after 60 days to a 12 month O Visa purposes retirement.

After having been much delayed I would like to get above underway immediately on arrival which I understand I can do.

Only problem I have with my schedule is that I should also visit someone albeit briefly in Malaysia.

So question is - if I manage to get the 90 days Visa - can I leave the country during the 60 day period - say for a couple of weeks - and then return??

Or do I have to be continually in Thailand throughout the 60 day run up to applying for extension to 12 months.

Further - if above possible do I have to return on a flight or could I for example catch a train back in?

Hoping someone out there has the 'knowledge'.

Best Rgds to all.

You'd need a re-entry permit to keep your permission to stay (90 days) alive when you returned from your trip. By train is okay.

You say multi entry in the title, but what you talk about is a single entry.

Regarding your trip to Thailand without a visa you should take into account the possibility that the airline won't check you in if you don't have a flight booked out of Thailand within 30 days from arrival.

Hi Terry,

Can the 90 day O Visa I mentioned be a Multi entry?

Hi Maestro,

I have booked long term return flights a few times before and never trouble - I usually go down to Malaysia to see friends etc and stay - then back up to BKK for my return flight.

Are they getting 'tighter' on this one or is it 'luck of the draw'.?

Rgds.

Some airlines at some airports check the visa requirements routinely, with other airlines it looks very much like luck of the draw where you may get a new check-in person fresh from the training course with a supervisor looking over his/her shoulder and thus wanting to do everything by the book.

No. Immigration can only issue single entry 90 day stay for later use for extension of stay - so a re-entry permit would be required for any travel/return during that time - just as a re-entry permit will be required for any travel after extension of stay is issued.

Hi Lopburi3/Terry,

So wife and I finally made it to Chiang Mai - on road to Visa purposes retirement.

Funds set up and date fixed in Immi Queue for when I do the 90 to 12 months.

Thing now is to switch my tourist Visa to a 90 day and no chance of a booking in queue with the lead times.

In to Immigration to try my luck tomorrow or next day

I have PP + Bank Book and Bank Letter.

Can anyone let me know what else I need in terms of documents - how many PP photos etc.

It may save a wasted visit.

My Thnxs.

Can not answer specific to that office but in general I would have several 4x6cm photos but only one is required for the actual TM.86 form (you could get that ready too).

Suspect you will need signed copies of passport data page/visa/entry and your departure card. Have some proof of address. Have 2,000 baht fee.

What are you doing for your wife's visa and extension.

I don't think they will do a conversion to a non immigrant for her unless she can also qualify for retirement with funds available.

Hi Ubonjoe,

Absolutely correct - I had thought that a marriage cert would do the job - but a no go.

Luckily we did a recce visit day before going for it.

All very helpful - looked at docs and said exactly as you have.

So off to bank to shuffle funds - so that both met requirements.

Next day back for 'real' - got there 7:30 am - out by lunch time with a brand new shiny Non O - 90 day Visa each.

So now need more advice - we want to go down to Malaysia by train - see country and go visit the new grand child in KL.

Leaving funds to 'mature' - they said at immi we would need a re-entry cert.

We will be back in last 30 days of 90 day period - to do the 90 to 1 year.

Any idea how much and what form to use???

Best Rgds.

Hi Lopburi3,

Thnxs advice received - wife and I now have a brand new shiny Non O - 90 day Visa each.

But more advice welcome - we want to go down to Malaysia by train - see country and go visit the new grand child in KL.

Maybe fly back - not sure yet of re-entry point.

2 points.

1. Any idea how much and what form to use for a re-entry???

2. I am booked with on-line booking system - but best date I could get was for 9 days before 90 days Visa runs out.

Is it OK to do the application for 90 to 12 month retirement at any time during the last 30 days of the 90 days O Visa???

Best Rgds.

A Re Entry Permit costs 1,000 Baht for a single.

Apply at Immigration.

Passport size photo needed.

TM8 Form.

Hi Lite Beer,

Just a last thought.

Is there any time limit on a re-entry application - so long as within existing Visa dates?

i.e. could I go get an application as of now in Dec 12 - for use in exiting Thailand early January 13 and back in early Feb 13??

In total say approx 40 days max out of Thailand.

Re-entry permit is always for the current permitted to stay until date so you can obtain and use anytime before that date but that date will be your permitted to stay until even if you arrive the day prior (immigration likely would ask you if you wanted visa exempt entry in that case).

Hi Lopburi3,

Will be back with 2 weeks to spare before end of 90 days.

Appointments booked for date approx 10 days before 90 days expires - so all looking good.

Just like to say that without this Forum and the information made available by contributors - I might well have given up.

I missed it a year ago due to one small point I had not covered - (Funds have to be already in a Thai bank - though not 'aged' - to move from 30 day Visa waiver to 90 days.)

All now appears basically easy and obvious - but not when you are starting out.

So once again my thnxs to all - we are booked into a local gym and generally enjoying life.

Best Rgds

I am new to Thai Visa, so hello! I want to spend 6 months a year in Thailand so I can keep NHS care in UK (my GP said this is okay!). I want to do all 12 months soon as I am near retirement age, but need to know first if I can take care of my health problems in Thailand, and get all my tablets and care. So, do I need multi entry O visa for that and do I need to leave the country after 90 days to activate the second 90 days? I apologise if it doesn't completely fit in with this thread, but well, pretty similar I think!? Hoping for help........Thanks.

So what is your question? You could pay for health service and medications here but there is no UK NHS. How would you qualify to stay here? Are you over age 50 and have 65k per month income or can put 800k in bank account? You could probably obtain tourist visas to cover six months a year stays.

Posted

Sorry for being unclear. What it is, is that at the beginning I'd spend 6 months in one stretch in Thailand, looking after my own health there. Then, return to UK for NHS care for six months. Once I retire to Thailand I will have enough for 800k in Thai bank, and am over 60 now. But tourist visa from UK only up to 60 day isn't it? I'd need 180 days so that needs multi entry O visa?

Posted

Tourist visas allow 60 days plus 30 day extension and are issued as one, two, or three entry so could easily cover six month periods. You can post in the medical area if you have questions about availability of specific medications or Google the name and Thailand.
