Featured Replies

No, not porn.....

Ive seen some great Thai movies from the well knowns like Ong Bak, Chocolate, and Beautiful Boxer was also really good and far from being a cheap b grader.

I don't remember all the names.

I love Thai horror movies, they seem to do them really well.

Also like a lot that are in the olden days where they fight with swords n chit

Bang Rajan. Decent action. Angulimala was interesting too. Most movies are romantic crap, the ones where blood&guts are the main attraction are ok.

The Legend of Suriyothai

They are all rubbish, this is a joke thread surely.

no, its not a joke, and no theyre not all rubbish.

Just cause you dont like them, I do and so do plenty others.

Go read a book then.

Just watched ' The Kick ' - not brilliant but pretty entertaining :)

I like the Thai (or Western for that matter) soap operas, it's a perfect example of my 90 % theory. smile.png

"The Legend of King Naresuan" was an epic and a classic on par with anything made and released in the West. Other lesser Thai movies can be highly entertaining, the Thai's have a solid track record of producing humerous movies, anyone who suggests otherwise has probably never really sat down and watched one.

Fun Bar Karaoke

Tropical Malady

Jan Dara

There's another couple that I can't recall the title of.

The vast majority of mainstream Thai film is puerile crap but anyone who thinks that there has never been any quality Thai cinema (ie well received by international critics and festivals like Cannes and Berlin) simply assume that because the mainstream stuff (that perhaps their wives or girlfriends watch) is all there is.

Yes they do indeed and the young Thai kids love them.

On a par with ANYTHING made and released in the west? I know this is all subjective but don't you think you might be overstating things a bit? It's fairly well made in terms of production values. The acting is fine (there are lots of very fine Thai actors). But the writing? The direction?

As good as the best of US, UK, France, Italy, Sweden, Germany? Do you know what the best of those countries really are? (And why leave out Hong Kong or Japan or China?)

By the way, I've sat down and watched quite a few. And my opinion is the same as many of my Thai friends (and Thai critics and cinephiles): mostly junk.

I am not an expert, neither fond of movies in general, but " Tom Yang Goong " with Tony Jaa was a very good movie IMHO.

I recall seeing another one with Tony Jaa, quite good as well if you like the genre.

Are Thai movies English subtitled these days, or do you all watch them same as a deaf and dumb ?

I agree. Pretty good for that type of flick.

Well of course it's overstating things, but I wanted the pendulum to swing a bit further the other way for a change! Actually, the real brilliance of King Naresuan is that it was an authentic reproduction of the era and all it entailed, anything evenly remotely comparable that is produced in the West would almost certainly involve animation sequences or mass produced and repeated horde scenes whereas the Nareusun movies all seem to have been acted by real people throughout.

Yes, funny. If you're 3 months old. I've taken a few glimpses when my mother-in-law watches the Thai comedies, can't remember laughing one single time. Care to give an example of a good one ?

I have, further back in the thread. And you said it yourself, you've taken a few glimpses, try sitting down and watching one in its entirety, a popular comedy or one that has good reviews. BTW you should get your keyboard seen to, it appears to be printing spurious random characters.

Sure everybody on this forum is fluent in Thai speaking, reading and writing. Except 8 out of 10 who have posted in this thread so far smile.png

Well, I hate to quibble but I would question (as have some academics) it's authenticity -- mostly historically speaking but also in other ways...like many western films set in the distant past, didn't everything appear to be rather clean and new -- like a movie set rather than real life?

Anyway, you're obviously welcome to your opinion and I don't mean to suggest mine is more valid.

You forgot to mention the bloke with woman clothes, the disabled, the super ugly and the midget.Otherewise a movie can never classify as humerous in Thailand.

I did not say "everyone", did I? You on the other hand asked about "all" of us, so I pointed that some people can watch them in Thai and understand them. Including at least one poster on this thread.

It ain't comedy if this guy isn't there, obligatory appearance in every flick:

He's done what, 1000 of them ?

Surprisingly, he can actually act. He was very good in pretty good and critically well received dramatic movie called "Cherm".

Two movies standout, The Moonhunter, especially the opening sequence.

For an insight into Thai mentality, Krop Kreua Teua Dam, in English, The Black Family, pure slapstick.
