Australian Passport – Renewing On-Line

Just thought I’d share my recent experience of renewing my Australian Passport on-line while in Australia.

It’s a good news story because everything was quick and easy and uncomplicated to do on-line.

If you can send an email, open a webpage … you can do this.

The good news is that you only have to manually handle it once and pay a fee … they still need an original signature, which I was able to do at my Post Office.

Applying for your Australian Passport renewal application on-line gives you a printable form which you can take to (selected) Post Office which accepts Passport applications.

So, all the necessary information is on that form.

Just take your form, your old Passport and the fee to the Post Office and you are away.

Just a note of caution … my local Post Office can take my Passport Photo … but it can’t accept my application …

So, simply ask, before assuming so that you don’t get a rude shock.

Now, nothing is for free anymore.

The good news is that the Passports are still valid for 10 years.

If you are an ordinary bloke, not a frequent traveller and not an OAP … the current cost is AUD $233

Sometimes the older person gets to relive his or her youth and the cosy for a ‘Senior’s Passport’ is the same as a child’s … AUD $117.

The down side … the ‘Senior’s Passport’ is only valid for 5 years.

So, having grabbed your old Passport, have a credit card handy to pay for it, this is the from that you get to populate complete.

A lot of emphasis on the photo and how to make it acceptable for the application.

I actually cheat a little with the photo.

Once you get to our vintage, your looks really don't change much, so I had I standard Passport photo taken (set of 4) and asked for the file to be loaded on my computer stick.

Now, instead of paying $10 every time I need a set, I simply print one off.

Of course, if your looks change a lot ... it would be obvious to use an older photo.

So, remember, you don't print this form off the internet, you actually complete it with all the details and then, once those details are completed the second page is available and it has it's own unique code.

So it's those two printed pages, complete with your old Passport and application fee that you take to the Passport centre/suitable Post Office.

For renewals, you still need to produce the old passport at the Aus Embassy in BKK, or an Aus Consulate in Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Phuket.

Yes, the old passport is needed to renew.

They actually cut off about 2 cms of the 1st page/cover ... the bit with the magnetic/identifying strip in it.

Unfortunately, after that, you are in a black hole as technically you then have no passport which you can use on a practical basis. So shortening the time to get your new passport issued is the best result.

If you can't locate your existing passport then unfortunately you have to apply for under the lost or stolen passport.

To do that you have to first report it. Guidelines are here for both at home and overseas ... Report a lost or stolen passport

If you apply from overseas eg Thailand you will be renewing your passport not applying for a new one. You will have to produce your current passport. If you cannot provide this a lot of questions are going to be asked of you.

You should apply for the renewal well before your passport expiry date, I did mine 12 months before it expired but one was in Australia. 3 weeks including mail delivery times by registered mail.

The " Seniors Passport " is only available after you attain the ripe old age of 75 years.

Is it possible to renew my son's Aus passport in Chiang Mai or must it be done in Bangkok ?

I did mine online from London. Took a few days and was easy. I also had to get a new birth cert sent from Melbourne which was easy and quick, but getting the ID certified in London was expensive.

Not so...i did it from bkk for a child.....still had to go to embassy at end, but all relatively painless and quick.
