Inguinal (Groin) Hernai Operation - Anyone Had One Here?

I have a Inguinal Hernia and am looking for answers from anyone out there who has had a repair operation while in Thailand?

What were the hospital costs including the operation?

Was it a one day thing or did you have to stay in hospital? If so how long?

How long before you could drive a car?

How long was your recovery period?

Thanks.

Yeap had one about 6 years ago at Bangkok Rayong hosptial, cost a little over THB 80k and was in hospital 2 days before being released, for the first week they wanted me on my back at home with no strenous activity, it was good thing my parents were here visiting, more specifically my dad, as my Mrs would have had problems getting me on my feet to do the simplest things like going the toilet as she is a very small lady and I am rather a big guy, not fat BTW..LOL

It was about 6 weeks before they would let me go back to work proper, I work offshore O&G so this was understandable

As regards driving a car, I would say dont do it in the first two weeks

Also dont wait for this procedure, I was walking around Tesco's in Rayong on Saturday morning with my parents/Mrs and felt something "go" in the groin area, with no real pain, but knew something wasnt right, my Mrs insisted we go the hospital on the way home and get me checked out, seen a surgeon at BKK Rayong and he wanted me under the knife, first thing monday morning, much to my protests as I wanted to go back to work and get it fixed in 4 weeks, but as soon as he started talking about strangulated hernia's and the fact I could die if this occured, I kinda decided it would be better to get it done on the monday morning as he wanted..LOL

The hospital care I received at Bangkok Rayong was first class and all I have to show for it is a 5 inch scar down the right side of my groin area, although all these years later I still get a bit "pulling" and soreness sometimes when I exercise.

The worst part of the surgury for me was the drips I was given while in hosptial, I assume it was antibiotics or something, but what ever it was really hurt and felt like my arm was on fire, although I must confess the morphine holiday I was given initally after coming out of theater was rather good, The little I remember of it LOL

I had two such hernias repaired by the "cut & sew" method, don't remember the cost as it was some time ago. Both done, some years apart, at the old BNH (Bangkok Nursing Home" before the "H" became "Hospital". Did like the old two-story wood rooms, nice place to spend five (5) days after the operations, A/C or ceiling fan, nice porch to sit on and watch the breeze in the bushes. This pre-internet days so got a lot of reading done.

Able to hobble around the day after but not comfortably. Then at home, same, hobbling for a couple weeks. Believe it was perhaps a month before I was driving again, stick shift, not auto.

Just a couple years back I had a Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gall bladder) op at the Vibhavadi Hospital. The doc said before the operation that he couldn't tell until he got "inside" if he'd have to do the cut & sew or if the laparoscopic procedure was OK. As it turned out, he did the lap.

Really great, two days in the hospital then seemed like I was 100% fine, no pain, and driving right away.

But, for the hernia, need evaluation as to whether or not a laparoscopic procedure can be done or not.

I had procedure done at BNH in 2008. I came home the same day-almost considered walking as I live nearby. I took it easy for a couple of days and was then able to do everything except work out in gym- had to wait 4-6 weeks for that. Cost was 136,000b. Am sure you can get better price elsewhere. Two years ago I needed back surgery; BNH wanted 300,000+. I went to BCH and had procedure done by the same doctor for under 200,000b. That being said my experience at BNH was very good. They even gave me a VIP room for a few hours after the operation and I could have stayed overnight.

Thanks for replies.

At least now I have some idea what to expect.

Off to see a consultant at the Buriram Private Hospital tomorrow.

Not keen on private hospitals as with my experience as they do tend to bits and pieces which are not sometimes necessary,

but done just to bump the price up. After all it is a business.

Luckily I have a fair amount of medical knowledge so have a good idea what to watch out for.

By this time next week should be done and dusted.

I had made plans to have laparoscopic surgery at the naval hospital in Sattahip. I was scheduled for surgery on 6th December, about 6 weeks after I first went there, but less than 48 hours before that I was called and told it was cancelled and I should come on the 13th to see the doctor.

So I checked out Samitivej hospital in Si Racha. The doctor I saw seemed a bit scatter-brained and the cost estimates were pretty high. Baht 130,000 for open surgery and Baht 210,000 for laparoscopic.

Then stopped at Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital. Saw Dr. Paiboon. He suggested open surgery with a general anesthetic would be best. The estimate was Baht 100,000. I was scheduled for the 11th. Felt a bit nauseous for 6 hours after the surgery, but virtually no pain unless I wanted to sit up. The nausea cleared up and by the next day I was up and walking about. Minimal pain. No hematomas or bruising aside from the actual incision site. Urinating was no problem.

I was dressed, packed and ready to go home after 24 hours. One night in the hospital. Total charge Baht 96,500. I have pain meds & antibiotics to take at home and right now I feel absolutely no discomfort. Go back next week to have the staples removed.

I know there are places where it can be done cheaper, but I have to say I was very well looked after and the result seems a good deal better than some others have reported on these message boards.

Sorry, too late to edit the message above. The estimates at Samitivej were Baht 180,000 for open surgery and Baht 210,000 for laparoscopic.

Had keyhole surgery at Bangkok hospital in 2009. Cost 160,000. There was also an option for normal surgery which was about 40k cheaper from memory.

2 nights in hospital. 6 weeks off work cause working on an offshore oil rig.

I was in the pool doing laps after about 4 weeks.

Had to get medical clearance to go back to work. Company doctor couldnt find any scars until i pointed out 2 dots and a small small scar insde my belly button. Said it was the best job she's ever seen and then I told her i did it in Thailand and she was equally amazed.

A few guys have gone down with it at work. They got it done in Australia and had to wait months for surgery booking to come up. 5 inch scar, ugly.

While bangkok hospital was expensive, i cannot fault the work one bit.

Oh yeah had mesh inserted as well.

I had mine done a Bangkok Rayong and the 5" + scar was the only option I had...couldnt do mesh or laparoscopic because of the size of the repair needed internally, but will say you can hardly see my scar these days...healed up nice..

Excellent. Members needn't be too concerned how they'll look in the speedos after a few years.
