Felt it in Nonthaburi 10th floor. Bedroom door swaying back and forth slightly (thought it was the kids mucking about) then slight dizzy feeling.

Figured it out after that.

My new owned dog since yesterday run away at this time, maybe has something to do with it, did nt see him back till now

I would imagine it would have been felt greater in CM than BKK, surprised it was felt strongly in BKK.

Wasnt the epicenter much closer to CM?

The USGS earthquake site (United States Geological Service) has this quake as a 6.8 earthquake and it occured in Myanmar (Burma to you "old school' guys) at 8:12 Bangkok time, or 7:42 Myammar time (time zone is half hour different).

The UTC time of the quake was 1:42 .

P.S. Being that far from an earthquake you might often only feel it as a rolling motion, because the shorter sudden shock waves get mellowed out by distance and are made into a rolling motion.

Also Bangkok is basically on a old seafloor sand and clay basin, and such a basin tends to sway with an earthquake rather than give a quick jolt as a more solid rock base would.

IF there was such an earthquake nearby to Bangkok (within 100 Km?) much of the damage to Bangkok would be from what is known as "liquidification" in which the clay tends to seperate from the water it contains....and therefore the ground subsides unevenly.

Being in a 50 story condo building in Bangkok during such a close quake would NOT be a good thing....because those structures ar mostly not designed to "tllt" more than a few degrees off the vertical.

Fourtunately, so far that hasn't happened....yet.

In lower Sukhumvit on 13th floor it was strong enough to make the fish pond slop. Reckon the fish were a bit shaken and stirred. And a 45kg antique Burmese temple bell was swinging - that takes some effort. That didn't happen in the 2004 Sumatra quake. This was by far the strongest - yet thankfully - shortest earthquake I have felt living in BKK.

My building must be really solid. Never noticed a thing at Kad Suan Kaew area.

Nothing out in the Sansai area either. Best get down to the local and make sure my stool is upright.

Room quite heavily swayed this morning for 30 secs on the 15th floor of the Centara Hotel in Chiang Mai. My first earthquake experience. 90% thinking earthquake, 10% maybe too much Sangsom last night.

I felt the swaying last night to. I thougt it was because of the whiskey

A 1.2km long teak bridge, built in 1849 to cross a lake in Amarapura, Mandalay, near the site of this morning's big earthquake. The bridge still stands today.

PHUKET (Reuters): The major earthquake that shook Mandalay this morning, and was felt in Bangkok but apparently not Phuket, is likely to have caused limited damage to Myanmar's second larget city, although one person has been reported dead and several construction workers are missing.

The 6.6 magnitude quake struck around 60 km (37 miles) northwest of Mandalay, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was shallow, at around 10 km (6 miles) deep.

"I've never felt such a strong tremor. I also heard some loud noises and the lights went out. No idea about the damage," one Mandalay resident said by telephone.

Several very strong aftershocks also hit the region but there were no reports of serious damage in Mandalay.

An official at the Mandalay Meteorological Department said the epicentre was near the town of Shwebo and struck at 7:41am, which was the same time in Phuket.

Local media said a half-built bridge over the Irrawaddy River near Shwebo and Kyauk Myaung had collapsed and there may have been casualties.

A police officer in Shwebo said one woman had died and 10 people had been injured in Kyauk Myaung.

"A house collapsed in Kyauk Myaung. The Radana Thinga Bridge, still under construction, over the river was badly damaged. A huge steel beam fell into the river and five workers went missing," he told Reuters.

A resident of Singgu, opposite Kyauk Myaung on the east side of the Irrawaddy, said some people were injured in the town and a few were killed at the river bank but this could not be confirmed with official sources.

State television, the usual mouthpiece for government statements in Myanmar, along with state-run newspapers, gave a report on the quake that did not mention casualties or damage.

Local media reported minor damage in several areas around Mandalay, including Amarapura, a town popular with tourists because of its monasteries and the longest teak bridge in the world. Pagodas had been damaged there, media said.

Bangkok is UTC +7, Yangon is UTC +6.5, which would make UTC time of quake, 1:12, no?
