Thailand, US to strengthen defence alliance

BANGKOK: -- Thailand and the US will discuss adjustments to military cooperation between the two countries to better cope with new and menacing challenges in Southeast Asia during the visit of the US Secretary of Defence, Thai defence ministry spokesman Thanathip Sawangsaeng said on Tuesday.

US Secretary of Defence Leon E Panetta and his team will visit Thailand on Thursday and Friday. They will pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and hold talks with Thai Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat.

The Thai and US defence teams will meet on Thursday to discuss bilateral military cooperation for the stability and security of the AsiaPacific region.

Col Thanathip said other issues on the agenda for discussion include the ThaiUS defence alliance, peacekeeping operations, operations for offshore stability, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and efficient preparedness for bilateral and multilateral operations in order to strengthen the relationship and cooperation at every level.

What menacing challenges are we talking about? Korea? China? The Thai's will give lip service (especially if there is some $ to be skimmed) but if the hit-the-fan.gif they would be like a headless chicken sitting on a fence!

Isn't Obama supposed to be here this week too? I saw a story about this a week or two ago but haven't seen any references since.
