So this Brit has (alledgedly) murdered his Wife and daughter owing to his own finacial problems (such as his website offering Penis Enlargement among other things did not take off, but thats not the point), buggers off to the UK and gets caught.

GOOD :D

He has agreed to extradition back to the USA for trial.

In "My two chew sets" the maximum penalty he will receive is Life without parole.

If he had commited this crime in Texas he would be facing the death penalty, am I right?

Why on earth can't you Yanks just agree that if you commit murder and are found guilty in one state you can expect the same penalty as if you did it in another???

Whichever way Death Penalty or Life.

Why are you the only country on earth that has different systems in different states. This beggars belief and I would like to know why the almighty US of A cannot agree between your different states what the ultimate penalty for 1st degree murder is and where this fits in with terrorists. If a terrosrist is proved a terrosist in My Two Chew Sets for blowing up people he will get life without parole , but in Texas he is brown bread (DEAD)

I guess the Powers That Be are never gonna try him in MTCS are they,? as they would seek the ultimate penalty surely, as they can ESCAPE (see Bad News Thread)

Why don't you just stop these double standards

Either/ Or :o Make up your minds

Rant mode off

Maybee one of you would be kind enough to enlighten me

If death penalty was guaranteed - we wouldnt extradite him back to yank land as you full well know.

In "My two chew sets" the maximum penalty he will receive is Life without parole.

Well first off, even though there is apparently a mound of evidence, he IS innocent until proven guilty. That would be the same in the UK or the US.

Second, if he is found guilty, it is unlikely that he will ever spend the rest of his life behind bars. The laws in "tax-a-chussetts" are so soft on crime that he would likely be eligible for parole while still a young man.

Third, parole assumes that he stays alive long enough to see a hearing. Wife beaters, baby killers and paedophiles usually get it pretty rough in the can. Chances are the guy is in for some pretty severe beatings, rapings, knifings, etc., if he does time in the general population.

Personally, I'm not saying he did or didn't do it and he deserves his day in court. However anyone who does something like that to an innocent woman and a more innocent infant, does deserve the death penalty.

People always moan and groan about the death penalty being cruel and inhuman punishment. I couldn't imagine anything more cruel and inhuman than life in a maximum security lockup. Anyone who does this kind of crime is no good to society and should not be a burden upon society until the end of their time. Once convicted, take 'em out back and get on with it.

AS to why different states have their own laws on various issues: Originally the US was made up for a dozen or so colonies whose governing bodies developed independently of each other. When they all got together to form a new country some wanted a strong central authority and some wanted a loose confederation of independent states. The political compromise was a constitution (not the same one we have now) which made the central authority very weak...I can't remember much about it but I guess after a few years it became obvious that it was innadequate so they got together again and created the constitution which is still used today (with amendments). It gave the central gov't more authoritiy but it clearly laid out what powers that the central gov't had and it clearly stated that any power not explicitly given to the central gov't was reserved for the states and the people....again a balance was made between those who wanted a strong central authority and those that did not. Later on the US had a civil war in which the northern states (who mostly favored a strong central gov't) fought against the southern states (who mostly favored a weak central gov't) and the north won. During the civil rights era, the federal gov't enforced federal laws to force racial integration in the southern states that had laws segregating the black and white races. The southern politicians talked about "states rights" which meant that the individual states had the rights to decide if they wanted to be segregated or not....while the politicians in the federal gov't doing the integrating talked about civil rights that were guaranteed by the constitution...etc.

So you can see that there is a long histsory of political disagreement as to which level of the gov't has the right to control what aspects of public and private life of the citizenry.

A good reason to maintain different legal jurisdictions for at least some laws is that the US is so big that there are people in different regions who do have different cultural heritages and outlooks on various issues and if there was only one jurisdiction for the entire country then at least in theory alot of people would be alienated because the laws would not be sensitive to their situation.

This is all as best as I can remember....but I think its mostly correct...

chownah is correct for the most part.

As been well stated by Spee, if this jerk committed these murders in Texas, that state has a 'fast-track' to the death penalty. You go straight to the head of the line for the 'chamber' for the more heinous crimes; as well you should... :o

Latest news is that he is being sent back.....

<deleted> are you guys on about...????

At least include a reference to the source in your posts please.

:o:D

I know it seems strange and it can be frustrated but the good thing here is that an America can move to a state that relfects his or her political views better than the one in which they live. Also, you can change something within that state that the people want with out effecting the whole country. America is just too big to make everything the same for everyone.

So if you want to Murder your Wife and Daughter take them on holiday from Texas to Massachusettes, Kill them and you know full well you will not face the Death Penalty..

That really makes a lot of sense to me. :D ...... and as for the USA being too big to handle one law... does the same apply in Russia or China? Or is it the same rules for all in those countries.?

I think So! Did your different States Vote on weather you went to War with Iraq or not ? Surely if your chosen State encourages a "non aggressive" attidude then you should not have had to send troops to the front should you?? But I bet Massachusettes never got that chance to say "We don't like to kill folks" did it???

I really do appreciate what some of you are saying in terms of "Go live in a state that reflects your political views", but the same can also be said for mass murderers then. "Go and commit Mass murders in a state where you know they won't put you to death for doing it"

I DO appreciate that being in a US Penatentiary for the rest of your life is a LIVING hel_l, maybee even worse than LOS..BUT, you still gotta life.. and it is not that hard to take it if you really can't hack it ...is it???

So PLEASE where is the logic in it... and is it not about time you guys really thought this through with an aim to either abolish it across your country or enforce it. Surely its time to come off the fence and CHANGE your Constitution :D

Good Luck guys... you have one Fukced up system..... :D

Well, I guess another way to look at it is that since the distance from Seattle to Los Angeles is more than the distance from London to Rome then why don't all those european countries just get it together and form one country with one constitution instead of having all those different laws and jurisdictions?....and why stop there...why not have the entire world have just one set of laws instead of having all those crazy different jurisdictions everywhere...its crazy.....

If you think of the US as really 50 different nations then you would be in awe as to how well they can coordinate their foreign policies towards each other and would try to emulate it in your own countries foreign policy!!!!
