So inappropriate.

It is not the right of anyone in gaol to mete out punishment. This is the right of the courts only. In any country. Gaol should simply be a deprivation of liberty. To allow systematic abuse simply lets loose a very damaged person onto the community at large once they are released.

He already is a very damaged person.

I think this fearless fighting machine will turn into a scared little mouse once he enters the Thai prison system and as such will receive the reception and hospitality he deserves fromm the inmates.

To suggest that inmates would be intimidated by this louse is a joke, the way he killed shows he is a basically a spineless coward.

Hopefully one way or another he never sees life outside prison again.

It's disheartening to see how many wish to use this tragedy as an opportunity to make vacuous comments, and "jokes".

A life has been lost forever, and another for the time being. I'm pleased that this guy is facing justice, but some of the comments here seem to be written by the kind of mob who used to turn up at public executions to jeer at the condemned. Tasteless.

Now just "hang on a minute" Are'nt individuals entitled to an opinion without being accused of belonging to a mob ! That attitude belongs within a dictatorship.

1) No one was really accused of belonging to a mob. Read again.

2) The comparison made was no worse than yours to a dictatorship.

3) The attitude you speak was one of concern for civil rights and due process -- precisely what is NOT typical in a dictatorship.

Sent from my iPad using ThaiVisa ap

1) I disagree - There is a clear accusation of mob mentality

2) Simply reacting to an unfavourable suggestion

3) What about the dead guy and his family?

Not Sent from my iPad using ThaiVisa ap

More numbers!

1) Accusation of having a mob mentality? Perhaps. That's not the same as accusing people of being in a mob.

2) Yes, simply reacting to an unfavorable comparison -- with another one at least as bad.

3) What about them? I don't understand your question.*

* I try very hard on this topic not to let my personal feelings interfere -- mostly because I expect many would find them annoying or offensive and would fell compelled to say things that would aggravate me -- but the fact is I feel a greta deal of contempt and even hatred towards the person who killed that Marine. I'm sure it will irk many, but while I'd certainly view the unjustifiable and and cowardly murder of anyone as wrong and tragic, the fact that he was a US Marine and had not only done his duty in an extremely arduous and hazardous theater of operations matters a great deal to me (I'd like to think it would matter to me whatever my background but perhaps the fact that I'm an American and a veteran aren't without relevance) and it made me feel genuinely enraged when I heard of what happened.

None of that changes anything I've posted or my views regarding and concerns for due process of law or civil rights.

The people who run and control prisons have an almighty job and responsibility to deal with. All those men trapped and cofined together 24 hours a day for years.

There will be so much testosterone and anger and fear and many more emotions to deal with.

They walk a thin line and must keep control.

Sure they have guns and discipline but they cant go shooting all the inmates who break the rules.... Can they? Of course they cant because the world wouldnt stand for it.

So they will need to ensure the prison runs smoothly by other means including giving a "Feel good factor" to the inmates. They dont want a war or a rebellion or an uprising. They must avoid this.

So they use rewards and recreational activities and so on to keep the inmates focused on a positive direction.

I dont know but I am sure there will be Muay Thai competitions for the inmates to focus on and use up anger aggression and energy. A man needs a focus and a release. All forms of life need this.

So I imagine this Aldhouse guy will become quite popular if hes good at it ... and if he tries to do in there what he has done in Phuket he will be erradicated and put down.

My feeling is that once he is over the initial shock of being sent to Thai prison and he begins to settle into the pecking order he will become involved with their system and fit in pretty well with the flow of things.

And on Fridays they all get fairy cakes.

What is it with you and fairy cakes ?

You are clearly fairly new to the idea of Thai prisons I think.

Visit Youtube or pick up one of the many accounts of life inside Bang Kwang (Big Tiger) and then you may understand the reality of the Thai prison system.

Ok I will. Always did enjoy the "Locked up abroad" episodes.

Yes I am new to the Thai prison system (phew!) but I will educate myself at some point .... but right now it is pissing down with rain here where I am so I am off to hang out in a beer bar with the young ladies and tourists rather than rot in hell lol ...... Cheers.

Good luck Aldhouse old boy rofl. I mean we all have times when you feel like killing a man but YOU DONT ACTUALLY DO IT!! duh

Enjoy your afternoon.

Bang Kwang is not a place you would ever want to be locked up in. It is known as "Big Tiger" because it eats men alive.

I agree with Terrythai, the men in there will show Aldhouse zero respect. If he shows any attitude he will be put firmly in his place.

But take the time to read about the Thai prison system. It really is as bad as they say.

Scary. Your own country deports you to a third world country.

Thailand is no longer a third world country just as Great Britain is no longer great or medieval

The point is that there appears enough evidence for a British court to rule that Aldhouse should be extradited to face charges in a Thai court. The Thai authorities have stated he will not face the death penalty if convicted to facilitate the extradition.

It is sad that a yong man who has served his country well has been killed, in whatever circumstances. The trial, verdict and sentence have yet to happen.

Your comments regarding the standing of Thailand and Britain as nations is your opinion - and has nothing to do with this topic.

Scary. Your own country deports you to a third world country.

No, they didn't deport him. They extradited him. If you don't know the differences between them, look it up -- but here's one of them: you are extradited when your government agrees there's a credible criminal charge against you/you should stand trial for something (serious) you are accused of.

Your characterization is dumb and deliberately dishonest.

I totally oppose any kind of violence and aldhouse should face a court n a lengthy sentence, obviously there is no doubt about his wrongdoing.

Not familiar with international law, etc, but I would have thought that he will be tried n sentenced in UK.

Did ever an american or russian got extradited from their own country?

IMHO it is your home country, you arrived there and should be tried there.

If he didn't go to Thailand I believe the Yanks would have tried to extradite him to USA as he killed an American serviceman and they believe their laws touch every country.

This is what I read at the time, I really do not know the facts on this statement though. Feel free to correct me if you know better.

To be honest, i wish the Yanks could get him, he would'nt be able to buy anybody off there as he no doubt will be able to do in Thailand.

Why don't you read the blog i posted a link to on page 2 of this thread instead of posting cliched hyperbolic comments straight out of the ludicrously sensationalist - and out of date - Prison Porn book The Damage Done? You can read about Bang Kwang from a Brit who's actually been living there for 7 years and has now been moved to the UK. You can also read about the things he preferred about Bang Kwang to his new home in the UK prison system.

You would have thought wrong -- and it makes little sense to think as you do. Crimes committed in one country should be tried in another? In most cases, no. And for good reason (think about it - maybe you can work out why it's not typically a good idea).

Yes, Americans have been extradited. And what has that got to do with the UK extraditing someone to Thailand to face the Thai justice system?

What does where you arrive and where your home country is have to do with anything (other than an extradition)?

Not before time. Welcome back.

Whatever sentence he gets, isn't it so that he will do 4 years here and the rest of his time in UK ?

Thats if he lasts 4 years !

Given that the vast majority of inmates do (and many far longer), not sure why he wouldn't.

Well, he is known to have a short fuse............not a good temperament for for any prison least of all a Thai one.

I don't recall the circumstances but for some godforsaken reason I've actually read that in the course of my studies; in any case I posted that the man was extradited, not deported and that there was a difference between the two. I don't recall anything in that link that would contradict those assertions.

As it happens I often do have trouble sleeping though...so thanks.

Without wanting to go off topic, the thing about both those books is the racist subtext. Alan Parker is now on record as saying he regrets making the film of Midnight Express for just that reason.

Da nada. Having a little trouble the the Zzzzzzs myself. What got me thinking about the specifics of extradition w/r the UK and Thailand was this in your reply:

"... - but here's one of them: you are extradited when your government agrees there's a credible criminal charge against you/you should stand trial for something (serious) you are accused of."

So, now that you've given me impetus to research it further even at the risk of falling asleep here's what Article II of the treaty says:

The crimes or offences for which the extradition is to be granted are the following :-

1. Murder, or attempt, or conspiracy to murder.

2. Manslaughter.

3. Assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Malicious wounding or inflicting grievous bodily harm.

4. Counterfeiting or altering money, or uttering counterfeit or altered money.

5. Knowingly making any instrument, tool, or engine adapted or intended for counterfeiting coin.

6. Forgery, counterfeiting, or altering or uttering what is forged or counterfeited, or altered.

7. Embezzlement or larceny.

8. Malicious injury to property, by explosives or otherwise, if the offence be indictable.

9. Obtaining money, goods or valuable securities by false pretences.

10. Receiving money, valuable security, or other property, knowing the same to have been stolen, embezzled, or unlawfully obtained.

11. Crimes against bankruptcy law.

12. Fraud by a bailee, banker, agent, factor, trustee, or director, or member or public officer of any company made criminal by any law for the time being in force.

13. Perjury, or subornation of perjury.

14. Rape.

15. Carnal knowledge, or any attempt to have carnal knowledge of a girl under age of puberty, according to the laws of the respective countries.

16. Indecent assault.

17. Procuring miscarriage, administering drugs, or using instruments with intent to procure the miscarriage of a woman.

If any of you come down with insomnia after reading the above, I'm sincerely very sorry.

BTW. Does anyone have the legal definition for Indecent assault handy? Please remember this treaty was signed in 1911.

From what I've heard from Brits locked up before (I've talked to two) is that they have to serve half (or ten years) of their Thai sentence in Thailand, and then part in the UK. The USA, and certain EU countries have the 4 year treaty with Thailand. Personally, I'd rather serve it in Phuket than in a US prison (where gangs and violence are rampant). Most of the foreign prisoners in Thailand are Nigerian.

If he has money, he will eat well, not have to sleep near the toilet, not have to wear leg shackles, and he will be able to shag ladyboys, and train Muay Thai while in jail. Highly doubt he will suffer as much as he would in a US prison.

Yes you are right - I guess. But the types of gaols you mention here will only be found in the perfect world or in paradise - unfortunately.

Anyway, I don't think that Lee Aldridge will be allowing any such behaviour to happen to him that Soupdragon is fantasizing about.

Any guy who attempts to commit acts of indecency upon him would have to be one hell of a crazy person. I don't think aldridge will be getting messed with too much.

Whats wrong with jeering at the condemned (at least in this case)? It's not like he is a political prisoner, or a man guilty of a minor crime. He was a notorious bully, who picked a fight with the wrong guy (a US Marine), and got beat down. He was then such a coward, that he stole a knife from 7-11, and stabbed a man repeatedly and fled the country. BTW...watch his fights on youtube...as a fighter, he is total "C" class. When he doesn't get his roids in jail, he will probably shrink down to the Napoleon size he was originally. "Pitbull" will become more of a "Pomeranian".

You are kidding, yes???

This was no war, no enemy, just a piece of scum who was beaten in a fight he himself started, then later stalked and cold bloodedly murdered the man with a knife while the man was unarmed and unexpecting his arrival, thus totally undefensive

SPINELESS COWARD, in my book.

You obviously are free to believe whatever you like but in this instance it would appear to be based on nothing but your imagination. (Personally, I prefer to have some sort of factual basis for my beliefs -- and give credence to the beliefs of others only when they are similarly founded).

There are recent examples of the US trying to achieve this with UK nationals,

one, Gary Mckinnon, where army, navy and NASA systems were hacked into, blocked by the current Home Secretary, one where the CEO Christopher Tappin is accused of selling batteries for missiles to Iran, not from US but from UK. He was extradited and now stands trial in the US on charges, which incidentally were within the UK law but outside US law.
