Bangkok Airways cancel flights from Samui due to torrential rains

The Nation 14/02/2006

Samui, Surat Thani - Bangkok Airways cancelled all flights Monday night from this tourist-destination island due to heavy rains, an official at the Samui Airport announced.

The public relation official announced at 8:15 pm that all flights from the island would be cancelled due to heavy rains.

The heavy rains also caused major roads on the island to be under water of about 50 centimetres deep.

Meanwhile in Narathiwat, many areas in three districts ? Waeng, Sukhirin and Sungai Kolok - have been inundated following four consecutive days of heavy rains.

Officials said the situation were worsened in the evening when the sea water level rose, causing the floods to be higher. In some areas, the water levels were as high as two metres, officials said.

They said many houses along the Sungai Kolok River in the three districts were under water.

Electricity was cut off from certain areas in Sukhirin for fear that villagers might be electrocuted.

Isn't this unheard of, this time of the year? :o

I was there and it was chaos with some people spending a day and night getting out. The airline that has a monopoly on the routes mishandled it but u had to be there to see it. Some people are shelling out 48 - 68 million baht for a villa (as advertised) and these are your only source of air transport in and out!
