A 70-year-old man has successfully bred a new two-tone colored orchid after 30 years in the making

A retired soldier has succeeded in breeding a new strain of orchids with two-tone color, after 30 years in the making.

The orchid is named "Vanda Udomsri", and belongs to 70-year-old Adisak Hongsin (อดิศักดิ์ ห้องศิลป์) who used as much as 30 years to create the breed cross-bred from the Vanda Phimjaibeauty (แวนด้าพิมพ์ใจบิวตี้) strain and the Vanda Thaweesuksa (แวนด้าทวีศึกษา) strain. With its two-tone pink and brown color, large petals, 2-3 weeks lifespan of each flower, and ease in caring for, the strain has already won awards.

The owner has named the strain Vanda Udomsri because he wanted the orchid to be the memorial for his love to his wife Udomsri Hongsin who died 16 years ago from brain cancer. He believed the strain will receive wide popularity from the foreign market. The orchid will be put on sale starting today, at prices beginning from 50,000 baht per plant.

:D I wish he would come and live with me and teach us how to sucessfully keep them. No matter where in the garden (or house) I put them water and mist them, they all curl up and die :o

Luckily they are reasonably priced :D

The reason why I posted this in the Pets'n Vets Forum is that according to the description in the Community Forums home page, this Forum can include topics on gardening etc.

Pets & Vets in Thailand

Discussions about our beloved Pets and how to make them happy and healthy. Farming, gardening, animals.

Maybe we should change the title of this Forum? Or add a new one?

Any suggestions?

They like lots of water, but they don't like to have their feet wet, so good drainage is essential.

They don't like water this is hard (full of minerals) or heavily chlorinated. If your water has a lot of chlorine then let it sit for a day before using. If your tap water is very hard, then find another source for watering your orchids.

I use coconut husk bits as a growing medium for orchids with small diameter roots like Dendrobium. I use charcoal and/or potsherds for plants with medium diameter roots (like Phalanopsis) and either nothing or big chunks of coconut husk for plants with big roots, like Vanda.

Maybe a "Plants and Gardening" subforum is a good idea....

:o Unfortunatley the one that is slowly expiring at the moment has no soil at all. It is just a cage like structure with the roots hanging down and wires to hang it up by (the cage). I have been using bottled water in a sprayer at room temp. still she/he is dying :D

What are the symptoms?

How often do you water?

What kind of orchid?

Have you checked for bugs, fungus, etc.?

It sounds like a Vanda.

Is it getting enough indirect sunlight?

/Edit - maybe this link will help.

Anyone knows if there is a garden club in Bangkok that caters for foreigners: by this i mean where some english is spoken .. I can read a little bit of Thai but I am reduced to look at the pictures mainly in any magazine I buy.
