Have some friends who I just found out are staying in Kharnon, (hope i spelled that correctly )

I have asked them to get their spy cameras out and see what they find... and send some pics... !

Anyway not a flicker of power going off (yet!!.... fingers remain crossed ) wink.png

The sorting out of loss of business and inconvenience can be sorted later.......The American lawyers are probably packing their bags ...... and be flying in by the plane load and get things sorted .... whistling.gifbiggrin.png

Ours was back on at 4 am too, but they have sent those mobile trucks to Samui and Phangan just in case the repairs don't stick.

Well, I'm looking on the bright side. if it keeps enough high spending tourists away, the Bkk greedies might rethink their hopes of destroying yet another beach.

Every cloud has a silver lining!

Ultimately the PM was responsible. She has to take responsibility, or she cannot call herself a leader. Certainly the governor of surat province should be immediately removed from his job. Immediately. He showed tremendous incompetence. The central govt. should have gotten the military involved after 24 hours. Once they realized the 12 year old boys running the power authority had no means of making the repair, they should have treated this like the national crisis this was, and done anything possible to get it fixed within hours, not days. Just one more black eye on the face of thailand. Just one more piece of evidence that regardless of the face they like to put on it, thailand is deeply mired within the 3rd world, and the infrastructure here is not what they want us to believe. Coming just before the peak season, the timing was poor.

Give your political grandstanding a rest!

Stop your ranting & raving - if you don't like it here go somewhere else.

Good riddance.

So according to you, nobody should be held responsible? What about the lost revenue, on what is now a nearly deserted island, in the lead up to the peak season? Where does leadership come into play? Why would the PM not have responsibility with this crisis? Or, are you saying nearly 100 hours without power, in one of the top resorts areas of the country is no big deal?

Can you please elaborate exactly what the military would be able to help in this matter????

The central govt. should have gotten the military involved after 24 hours.

They could shoot the people who make silly suggestions?

Please explain what is silly about this? Many countries, including the US get the military involved, wwhen it comes to national disasters. Please do not tell me this was not a disaster. The military has rtremendous resources, engineers, planes, helicopters. I heard a part needed to be shuttled down from CChiang Mai, and that held thing up. Why not use a military helicopter for something like that? What was silly, was the fact that it was not treated as the priority that it realy was!

Many of us love it here, but that does not prevent us from airing our grievances. Is it possibly you are taking yourself too seriously?

The US military does. The Thai military just has a lot of conscripted teenagers.

oh dear oh dear !!!

Ever heard of too many cooks in the kitchen??? .......

What could the army do to help? blink.png ...... It would be like western union workers leaning on a shovel, while one person does the work.....biggrin.png

Anyway, I've heard from two sources now, that the Norwegian contractors who installed the system/ cable, are the ones working or worked on the repair...

I cannot verify that.... only passing on, what has been said...

Also heard today, that a new line will be put in next year 2013... not 2016... ???? I believe that came from Thai TV news... and I'm not finished yet....laugh.png but from another source that the power maybe down again tomorrow while they finish what has not been completed...

We'll see what the morrow brings! whistling.gif

Lets, be thankful we have great weather right now .... had there been floods it could have been much worse ..... wink.png

Not sure where this erroneous rumour of a 'nearly deserted island' started from. I would guess that it was not started by anyone driving around the ring road.

The stories of 'thousands of tourists fleeing the island" and "only 1,000 tourists left on Samuui" are just sensational, headline-grabbing, verbal diarrhoea, bearing no relationship to reality.

The way that things work in Thailand has not been fixed in the last century, why do we think that a few million tourists a year are going to change it in this or the next century.

I am taking myself too seriously? clap2.gif

This from the guy who wrote all these agressive personal diatribes against the mayor and now again about Yingluck and everybody else he can think of? Who thinks Samui is the navel of Thailand, who seems to have no understanding of basic Thai politics but wants everything to work as in the West? Who wants to remove everybody from his/her post who doesn't function like he wants?

Contrary to you I took this blackout very easy, and I have business on Samui that also suffered.

Seems you don't realize that your rant sounds extremely condenscending and patronizing, and when you love it here it certainly doesn't show in any of your comments. There is a big difference between an agressive rant and constructive criticism (or airing grievances as you call it).

Take a deep look in the mirror and you might realize that what you're accusing me of in your comment is more a description of yourself.

Couldn't agree more.... there were as many Speed boats as usual returning from the Marine Park, Koa Toa this afternoon ....at least 9 of them, x an average of about 32 people.

Zip line truck was busy today too, taking people back and forth....

Also loads of people coming off the Lomprayah ferry too .....

As for people canceling their trips, does not seem to hold true either .....rolleyes.gif

I know two couples looking for long term house rentals (6 months minimum ) in Maenam area.... Everywhere booked for "high season" .......

If any one knows a couple of places with kitchen and at least one bedroom, internet .... PM me!!! (7 to 15,000 baht range)

As for compensation, yes I do agree there should be, I am sure the government will dig deep into the coffers and everyone will get 5000 baht, just like they did after the March flood, two years ago whistling.gif

Why the PM? What about the smuck who dropped his monkey wrench into the hole? (if that's what it was!)

Crisis - what crisis?

And it is no big deal - it happens all the time the world over!

If nearly deserted now then I'll be back - too smothered with rude arrogant tourists last time I was there!

This, along with the "it'll be repaired by 12 noon" from the Governor who surely knew otherwise are reminiscent of the nonsense spouted by the Iraqi information minister cira 2003.

BTW: If you still have details re where to file a complaint re sound please PM them to me.

Exactly, which is why I hope many, many of them get really upset, go home and tell all their friends not to go to Thailand. It's the only hope for the very few remaining undestroyed beaches in Thailand.

I was hoping the "recession" I keep reading about would keep them away, but I think it's a myth, as the flashpacker hordes keep arriving.

someone is to blame for this sometimes the Thais have to face up to their repsonsablities and take responsablity for their actions problem is here is that they do not like to face up to things which is why no one shall execpt the blame and learning becomes tricky.

The mayor is not directly responable. well i dont think so but he is responable for the running of this island so if there is a big cock up then he should be the one to put his hands up and take the blame and do his best to fix it.

as for people saying if you don't like it then go home. The problem is that 1000 tourists did go home which is 1000 less customers on this island for thai and forang business. This effects everyone as samui is a business tourist island which depends on its high seasons. It depends on them so muich that most people need to make enough money to carry them through the low seasons.

this is not bangkok where there is work and buisiness all year round

if 1000 tourists left and say on avergae they soent 1000 baht minimum a day then thats 1,000,000 baht per day that the island has lost

Posted

Again, you don't seem to understand how the bureaucratic system works in Thailand. The Mayor is not responsible for the running of the entire island and has ZERO authority over anything electric related. Heck he doesn't have any authority over the taxis either for that matter. Please learn a bit about how the system actually works, it does make life here a bit more understandable when you do.

so who is incharge of the whole island?

What is the point of having someone incharge of the island when he is not icharge of the island.

The mayor has the power to place more stricer policing on taxis.

the mayor has the power to give the rubbish trucks to companies of his choice cough cough

the mayor works for the government so if the electric is government owned then does he have the pwoer to sack the boss off the electric station in samui he cannot fix the mistake that this men that he is inchagre of made.

or put pressure on the people to move things around and speed up processes.

I think it is also his choice to have the election around christmas and place loud nouise around the island.

too be honest i don;t really care who wins as long as they are quiet

Posted

I was on KP today, yes it's quiet, compared to Samui, but then it always is ....

I spoke with two KP resort owners, they say no one has cancelled bookings, and no one left because of the power cut ...

The "high season" starts in a couple of weeks or so... so business pretty much as usual.... thumbsup.gif

Certainly no shortage of people arriving on Samui this afternoon ... as pictured!!!

No one could ask for nicer weather!!! ..... except for those of us, acclimatized it's been "cold" the last few nights and mornings !!! w00t.gif whistling.gif
