The best way to go would be to fly. smile.png

The best way to drive? As you say there are two choices. One more direct, one more scenic. If time is a factor go the more direct route. South to Surat Thani and then west to Phuket. Allow about 9 hours if you don't stop for lunch.

If you go to Bing Maps you can get directions and print them out if you set your odometer the distances will be close enough. http://binged.it/T6vIYp

If you are leaving at 4am you have left already?

Going next week, was thinking of going the Ranong route, so was wondering if this is shorter, there will be no hurry!

If you click and drag the route in Bing Maps to the coast road you will see there are actually three routes the other two longer by some hours than the direct route.

Also direction Surat Thani there is one more route.

Good which one is it?

Doesn't help much to tell Dogpoo there is another route without at least telling him or showing where it is.

LOL, "If you click and drag the route in Bing Maps to the coast road you will see there are actually three routes the other two longer by some hours than the direct route."

Going the Surat route he can follow the signs to Surat, with a turn left at a gas station. He an also go straight on there, and turn left after appx. 25 K closer to Krabi. The latter route is longer, and although it is a 4-lane road for most of the way and really empty, the first road is faster, especially at night, and taking into consideration that also this road is now 4 lanes for the most part.

Sorry, don't know the road numbers, so this can be confusing, which is why I did not try to explain earlier.
