Mosquitos - Dange Fever

Featured Replies

Just a caution to others about the potential risk of dange fever from Mosquitos.

I am in the Udon Thani area now and am recovering in hospital after being mis-diagnosed twice by local practitioners.

Symptoms are:

High Fever, nasty headache, sore joints/body aches, throwing up, dizziness, loss of energy.

If in doubt, go to hospital.

Yes, no joke. The villagers get told when Dengue is about, we even had an inspector come by to look for stagnant water, he left non toxic chemicals to kill mosquito larvae, free of charge. A kid from Cambodia died in Buriram hospital last year from Dengue.

Sorry to hear your news.

I had dengue about 6 years ago and still panic when I see a mosquito.

Your advice is wise, I waited a few days to go to the hospital -stubborn stupid idiotic mistake on my part.

Get better SwissMate78.

Thanks Will

The Doctor said the period after high fever is over is when it is most dangerous.

Glad I didn't stay home any longer.

I am surprised that you were misdiagnosed since dengue is so common in Thailand. Do/did you have a rash (you didn't mention it) which I believe is one of the defining symptoms of dengue?

Sophon

mis diagnosis is most commonly sending people home with "regular dengue" when they have the hemorrhagic variety.

it happened to my neighbor, very nearly died.

I got dengue fever about 16 year's ago when I was going 'up jungle' exploring the old railway track of the Thai/Burma railway from the 2nd World War. I suffered flu like symptoms for about a fortnight but didn't see a doctor until I came out in a red rash all over my body. He took one look at me and said laughingly "You've got dengue fever but the red rash is the last symptom and you will be back to normal in a couple of day's time". He also said that I wouldn't get it again as my body will now have built up a resistance to it. What he hadn't told me was that there are different strains and that my body is only immune to the fever that I got.

Yes i got signs of rash on my body. But the first doctor didn't check for a rash. She diagnosed me with a throat infection.

Second doctor in a bigger town couldn't measure any fever so it got discounted also. She mentioned something about allergies in the air too.

After I kept getting worse and my gut telling me something else was wrong we went to hospital. They confirmed dengue the next day after many jabs. I will be released when blood is normal again, hopefully tomorrow.

I didn't know anything about dengue fever until today.

Had it five years ago. Started with the feeling my eyes want to pop out from the skull, some joint and muscle ache, utter weakness. Cleared up within 3 days. Didn't bother to go and see a doctor. It's a virus, there is no cure anyway. Until not long ago I thought catching it provided me with lifelong immunity, but the doc that recently warned me about another outbreak in Pattaya told me otherwise.

It's transmitted by this mosquito with prominent stripes

active in the morning and evening hours, not during the night. Unless you apply a repellant before dusk and dawn, there is no way to protect yourself from catching it, and no vaccine. Accept it as a price to pay for the access to the sexiest girls on he planet.
