Herds of wild elephants have trampled more than 80 hectares of farmland in Pegu Division over the past three months, according to a report by Mizzima. Local farmers say that the herds, ranging in size from four to 20 animals, have overrun fields and ransacked barns in search of food. “It began in October. We reported the matter to the village officials, who in turn asked for assistance at township level. However, nobody has come to investigate or fix the problem,†said one farmer. Pegu’s Forestry  Department has said it plans to open an elephant camp in the Yoma Myout Zardari forest area.
