PHUKET: -- Global celebrity Paris Hilton will not be attending the three-day New Year beach party originally slated to be held on Surin Beach from December 30 to sunrise on January 1.

The news of Ms Hilton’s imminent no-show at the event came in an email from her lawyer sent to the Phuket Gazette clarifying that Ms Hilton’s name was not to be used in any promotion of the event other than the event’s launch in Bangkok on October 22.

The glamor-gilded launch was covered and broadcast across the world by global media agencies.

However, Glenn “GG” Gulino, Esq. of g2 entertainment wrote in his email, “Your rights to use her name ended weeks ago and since you cancelled her NYE appearance you cannot use her name. Thank you.”

However, as the Phuket Gazette at no time invited or cancelled Ms Hilton’s attendance to the party, Gazette editors were left to believe the email was intended to be sent to the party organizers. To date, Mr Gulino and party organizers Sydictive Element, despite many attempts by the Gazette to clarify the situation, have yet to confirm this.

While the Paris Hilton mystery unravelled, Sydictive Element had also yet to respond to reports that the beach party will be moved to Phuket’s premier party town, Patong.

At last report, Sydictive Element had been granted approval by local authorities to hold the party at Surin Beach – after weeks of strong opposition from some local residents and businesses, but a mixed response from others.

Patong Deputy Mayor Chairat Sukban told the Gazette on Wednesday, “The party organizer had a talk with Phuket Vice Governor Sommai Prijasilpa yesterday [December 18] about moving the party from Surin Beach to Patong Beach.

“I have no idea right now if it is going to be held in Patong because we still have to discuss with other local organizations and agencies, such as the police, and we have to talk this over with local beach vendors and other operators who would be affected by the party,” he said.

Mr Chairat also explained that Patong Municipality did not have enough budget to quickly provide all the ancillary services required by such a large-scale event, which was touted at the party’s launch in October as expected to attract up to 50,000 revellers.

“If the party is going to be held in Patong, the organizer has to deal with issues such as security, cleanliness and other problems that might arise, all by themselves,” Mr Chairat said.

Echoing Patong Mayor Pian Keesin’s concerns voiced publicly on Tuesday, Mr Chairat raised the issue that Patong Municipality regulates public areas.

“Usually, when we arrange concerts or performances, they must be free of charge. So how can you set up a restricted area and charge people for entry when you are using public land? How can you stop people from entering the beach when the beach is public?” he asked.

“Just imagine the idea of closing Patong Beach. I feel it would be very difficult and I think it is a very 'big' idea,” Mr Chairat added.

I should throw a whole bunch of 5s in here as this is hilarious. Why anyone would consider paying to see her apart from a Playboy spread is beyond me. Thus has been a cluster f...... from the word go.

Inevitable. No planning or set location 10 days out.

Im thinking this was just one big scam, lets see if refunds for tickets happen.

Wonder if the sponsors will be getting their money back for this fiasco?

ya, lets say wonder!

Gazette's got it moved to Patong Beach now, makes more sense for sure.

Not really as Mayor Keesin pointed out, Patong is a public beach so the promotors can't charge admission. I think this "party" was dead on arrival! Of course the mayor up in Surin probably took the money to say okay, only to have the Governor later shoot down the plan with two weeks to go. An event this size takes time, money and experience to plan. Seems as though Synictive has none of those!

So Jimi, you saying then that it makes more sense to hold it on Surin beach?

We all knew it was a stupid idea right off the bat but Surin beach is not equipped with facilities that Patong has in place already for such a thing. That was my point, not admission revenues.

No. It was a lame idea from the start. And I really doubt it will or would have happened anywhere on Phuket given the short time from it's announcement, without consulting local officials, community and paying out a lot to smooth the way... I'm sure they paid a bit to the mayor of Surin, then have the Governor say, no, you need to find somewhere else... Welcome to Phuket. Leave your money, now go home!

Maybe they should go knock on the door of the local government, since they are the cause of this fiasco.

Wonder if the F1 race in 2015 will be handled the same.

While I agree that the government should have been clear from the beginning, it really looks like the organisers first made the announcement of the party, and after that contacted the local authorities. So first and foremost the organisers are to blame IMO.

So it seems to be all about face then which is one of the major problems in Asian countries.

This country could not organize a piss up in a brewery.

This stuff and nonesense goes on day in and day out and the population just stand around and Mai pen Rai. You do not always get what you deserve but in most cases the Thai public deserve what they get. What other nation would stand by and accept such utter incompotence from paid officials

Thailand , Land of Fails. God help us with the F1.

yep, but it's most the other way round: The reaction cost the face.giggle.gif

Anyone else thinking, the party would only win, without another Hilton on the Island?

I agree with stevenl that the organisers failed to do sufficient research, and hence are to blame for the (likely) failure of the event to happen. However, I'm equally sure that it must have been a nightmare to deal with the layers of local and provincial government, particularly in an environment where everybody wants the prestige of influential, well remunerated positions, but vigorously decline the accountability that comes with these roles.

Another example of Phuket government using the 'if you don't make a decision you don't make a mistake' model.

Yes, agree with that. As I have said all along, the indecision of the government has made things worse and worse.

I think it's the "I will only make a decision when I have been given enough tea money to make the decision" model. :) :)

If the party ends up being as good as the organisation they will have an mp3 player and a couple of iPod speakers. Sounds like Patong is a great place not to be on new years eve. 20 thousand extra people? What a shambles.

Maybe the 20.000 people announced by the organisation is as accurate as was the presence of Paris Hilton and the party being held at Surin beach.

Well...I estimate that there will be at least three deaths related to this event in Patong.

Anyone want to bet with me to the contrary?

Yes, I'll take you up on that "drama queen" statement of yours. Make it a beer.

No deaths.

You sneaky old dog. The odds have obviously swung in your favour since the declaration of no alcohol.

How about three deaths in greater Patong on NYE including the area allocated to the Syndictive fizzer...

Or better still, how about betting me that there will actually be no alcohol consumed inside the area allocated to the Syhdictive fizzer. I will give you 20 to 1 on odds on that punt.

Be careful, gambling is illegal in Thailand. Yes I am cavorting all over the floor laughing about the huge illegal gambling industry in this country that also keeps a huge number of loan sharks in business. Tragic actually.
