I'm happy to report that I've finally found a local retail source for several hard-to-find Mexican food sauces here... specifically jalapeno, chipotle and habanero sauces.

There's actually a TV member, Don Battles, who runs a Don's Foods operation and restaurant up in the Chiang Rai area who produces the sauces along with a variety of other food products, including meats, sausages, bakery products and a variety of Mexican food items.

Problem was, living here in BKK, I'd never heard of or seen any products made by Don's Foods until I chanced upon bottles of his sauces in one BKK restaurant, and began tracking down just where they came from, since I'd never seen that brand anywhere in the local stores.

From a message exchange with Don recently, he informed me that his Mexican sauces ought to be being stocked by the Foodland supermarket chain in BKK. But I informed Don that I have several Foodlands near my home, and I'd never seen Don's sauces on the shelves in any of them. He said he'd have his staff check into that. Fast forward a couple of weeks and lo and behold what shows up on the shelves on the Foodland Sukhumvit Soi 5...

I just wish he was selling them in larger size bottles, but beggars can't be choosers, I guess. Don does, I believe, sell food products direct via his company's web site, but these days, the only listing for the sauces in his product list are 5 liter containers that sell for 895 baht apiece, which probably is a bit more sauce than I likely could use in a reasonable amount of time.

Nevertheless, I tried each of his sauces in my local restaurant recently with some morning scrambled eggs, and they were quite tasty... Really miss those flavors. And Don's Foods website indicates the sauces are made from peppers grown on his own farm operation in Chiang Rai.

So I'm going to be picking up some bottles at my local Foodland. And hopefully, this will be of interest and use to the many other Mexican food lovers out there... Cheers... And thanks to Don!

Why is New Mexico Chile so good?

· In the Southern part of the state where much of the chile is grown, there are 350 days of sunshine each year Chile craves warm, dry weather and warm soil. We can deliver!

I was shopping tonight at the Foodland Suk Soi 5, and had the abovementioned sauces on my list...

To my surprise, the full shelves I first noticed two days ago had been substantially depleted as of tonight. And of the three varieties, the stock was down to half or less for two of them, and just a couple remaining bottles for the other. I managed to snag my choice of two jalapeno and one chipotle bottles.

So I must not be alone in noticing that Don's sauces finally made it onto the store shelves here.

I've talked with Don, and indeed he reported that his products are stocked by SOME Foodland stores...

However, the two that are in my neighborhood in central BKK had never stocked them, and I'm sure because I regularly scan their shelves for any Mexican food products. And unfortunately, the two Foodlands near me have pretty sorry and very limited Mexican food selections -- far less than what Villa stocks by comparison.

Lately, perhaps because of my complaints/inquiries to Don, the Foodland Suk Soi 5 recently began stocking all three of his sauces in the 90 ml bottle size, so I was able to buy a supply. But within a week, the substantial store shelve supply I'd seen originally was almost entirely gone, and hadn't been restocked at that point. So it will be interesting to see how that plays out... Clearly there was some pent-up demand for his products.

I believe Don also had mentioned he believed his sauces had been stocked by the Foodland at Patpong... But I don't get down that way too much, so I've never had a chance to check their supply there.
