I want to say the unmentionable.

Particularly because the other threads on the cartoon versions of religion and free speech seem to miss a very important point, often sadly ignored by the farang (yet central to Thai and Muslim culture).

This is the tradition, shared by us all in varying degrees, of hospitality and respect for our guests' (or hosts') feelings.

How much respect did the Danish editor of Jyllandsposten demonstrate to the thousands of Muslim guest workers Denmark has invited to its factories to work in the menial jobs Danes were reluctant to take? Is not free speech of no value at all if it is not controlled by our respect for others and their feelings? What others are calling free speech is nothing more than licence, which is a function of anarchy not democracy. Is that what we want?

And if you have difficulty in getting your head around the above - try this one (but, please, respect Forum Rules and keep your comments to yourself): what would have been the reaction, of yourself, and others you know, had the subject of these cartoons been HMK and HMQ of the Kingdom of Thailand?

You might ask, what has this got to do with the Jews? Well, the answer to that is - nothing.

It never has.

Believe it or not, but most of the people you are refering to wheren't invited. In any way.

But that is besides the point.

We are here in Thailand as guests. Do we demand that everyone should change to our customs?

Did England not tolerate Islamic mullahs (living on British soil) rights to free speech several years ago? - inciting intolerance to western values?

What was the outcome of this tolerance to free speech? :o

ps. Welcome back Thomas Merton :D

You are wrong and missing the point:

1. I lived in Denmark for over 20 years - the majority of Muslims living in that country were invited as "gæstearbejdere"

2. No one is asking the Danes to change their customs. It is also a part of Danish hospitality to respect guests' feelings. In this case the editor of Jyllandsposten did not. He (and others) is now paying the price for his bad manners*.

It is a simple as that.

* Publication, incidentally, wasn't only a faux pas but a conceived and deliberate political move by Flemming Rose (the editor) to provoke the Muslim community against whom he has an almost pathological dislike. Flemming Rose has affiliations with an extreme anti-Muslim organisation based in the USA.

You are claiming that Denmark is completely different from the other surrounding countries in the region?

Have the numbers on another board, but in 2003 (in Sweden) I seem to remember that 67% av immigrants where family-immigrating. That is, a relative or spuse live in the country and the person moves there with them.

We also had 'Gästarbetare' but that was 15-20 years ago, atleast. Most was during the 70is. The last three big waves if immigrants had absolutly nothing to do with work-immigration, and it has clearly been shown in statistics. In Rinkeby the unemployment-rate has been qouted as high as 85% amongst some groups of imigrants. (North-african had the highest unemployment-rate if I recall correctly.)

In anyway, your last statement is a lie.

No, he didn't have (and don't) have any ties to any extrem jewish group in america. I know what you are aiming for and you are wrong.

When does the line'The jews did it' come?

When "guests" (or hosts) abuse their position, especially in the area of free speech, they will be - and are - prosecuted.

If I visited your house in Australia - a land that also prides itself on free speech - and under my visit exercised my right of free speech to criticise your mother or your wife in your home, how would you react?

Thanks, khall, it's good to be back.

I used to think so until I lived there and discovered that books are regularly banned, and the constitution contains no bill of rights or equivlant. :o

This is irrelevant. It is of no importance whether your new landsmen are "Gästarbetare", refugees, asylum-seekers or family members - they are still your guests, and as such must be respected.

I am Jewish myself, so any reference to extreme Jewish groups in America, would be, as I am sure you appreciate counter-productive.

I am referring to his association with Daniel Pipes: http://www.danielpipes.org/

Which books may they have been CV?

Many that dealt with police corruption, and others that were thought to be "troublesome".

"Is not free speech of no value at all if it is not controlled by our respect for others and their feelings?"

"Does free speach have no value if it is uncontrolled by our respect for others and their feelings?"

"Does free speach only have value when it is controlled by our respect for others feelings?"

"Does uncontrolled free speach have value?"

"We should never say anything that is impolite."

"If you have nothing good to say then say nothing at all."

We need to differentiate between what is impolite and what should be outlawed.

I agree absolutely. Still, the US "conservatives" would claim otherwise to hide their true hate of muslims or anything "foreigner" for that matter. See how the like of Spee and friends will deny other people freedom when it conflicts with theirs and their little selfish comfort. This is what it's all about. It's about domination, not survival.

What a surprise this is... :o

Austrailain will defend your right to free speach, reserving the right not to agre with what you say.

If the average Aussie invited somebody to their house, and that person started criticising your family,...he would be fair up them, freespeach or not!
