What Do Thais Think Of Thai Visa Forum?...

Recommended Posts

I'm Thai. born in Isaan, raised in the west.

I've got lots of relatives and Thai friends and none of them have heard of TV.

Hello doontp, what do you think of Thai Visa Forum?

a very informative site. like someone previously said.......an invaluable source of info

what do I think of most of the members? most posters would not have the balls to say to someone's face what they type........a lot of "keyboard commandos" in these forums. but to balance the scale.....this forum is filled with many good folks.

You're not wrong, from time to time posts say I can take on any Thai anytime one to one, cause I'm so tough. Through my wife I mentioned this to two Thai men (ex gang members) in my Thai family. They just laughed & said why one on one, we fight to win and cause much pain, otherwise why bother, Westerners don't understand Thai style

My wife and I read some of the threads to the family when things are quiet or we are in need of some good entertainment. The family had never heard of it before naturally but now they ask that my wife and I read a few threads. They say it re-enforces their belief that most visitors in Thailand are very self indulgent. There is a Thai word for it but as we are not allowed to use Thai characters here I can not print it.

But the family get a very good laugh out of it...similar to Thai Soaps only not as well written!

What does a Thai think of the Thai Visa forum? They do not think about it any much more or less then a farang.

Being on the forum and in 'real' life, the same norms and value's apply. It may sound like i am stating the obvious but sometimes people seem to forget to remain respectful to one another. Perhaps some feel more free to misbehave just because they think they are not in the real world when online.

Naturally there are a few socially-impaired participants but i think just as many as i would know in real life.

Thanks Krisb for raising thisthumbsup.gif

Think many Thai folk have a problem understanding written English as well as spoken stuff and will be weeeeeeeeeeeell confused by our discussions. Just look at English stuff written on bill boards or on television sad.png . Soooooooo, forget it. thumbsup.gif .

Many Thai do, but a lot don't' and the would not be confused at all about the attitude of some posters towards them.

Why would they even bother to try and read a forum in a foreign language when they have plenty of their own to read? How many westerners participate in pantip every day?

I don't know how many westerners participate in Pantip every day, but I do know that more Thais speak English than expats speak Thai and that how ever many westerners participate in Pantip, they are more respectful of Thais there, than they are in this forum, and in other expat forums to a larger extend.

I also Also know that if I was a Thai that spoke English after reading some of the comments that posters make here ( not all but enough to be noticed) would not conciser this forum Thai friendly and consider other venues.

I don't know how Foreigners are treated in Pantip (i don't read Thai) but if the attitude toward foreigners were the same in Pantip as it is in expat forums toward Thais, then I would not blame foreigners for not participating

.

I grant you that expat forums are for expats, and Pantip is for Thais, but I am sure that some Thais might want to participate in this forum to practice their English and get an outside perspective and are turned off by the tone of some posters

but I suspect that if foreigners do not participate in Patnip, it is more a factor of language rather than negative attitude towards them by some , I underline the word some because it is not all in this forum who behave thus, just enough to spoil it for the vast majority who have Thai families, love Thailand, and are respectful of Thais.

I think we give ourselves far too much credit. There is a Thai internet out there which is what the vast majority of Thais are drawn to. They don't actually care what we think of them. It doesn't affect their daily existence.

I don't mean to be augmentative but..smile.png

we all care what others think about us, especially our guests. How would we like it if immigrants back home talked about as in derogatory terms, (they do, and we dont like it, we want them to go back home)

Of course arguably it might not affect their daily existence

, But assuming that my premise about Thais not participating as much in TV because the level of discourse.

wouldn't be wonderful if your membership increased by the Thai participation margin?

and wouldn't that open additional revenue streams for TV?

on a personal level when I ask a question about Thailand, would it not be more productive if we had some Thai input?

Then there are the political dangers, could Thai politicians when formulating policy towards "Farangs" use their opinion of what Farangs" think about them partly from attitude data obtained from such forums.

Could an astute Thai Politician use the" Farang scapegoat" to attain popular support by exhibiting quotes from this forums and saying "This is what this people think of you, should we allow them to x, y or z " ? I know it might sound far fetched and paranoid, but it will not be the first time in history that such things have happened.

Any way this is my opinion right or wrong it does not hurt thinking about it.

If you were thai, would you, in all seriousness, want to expose yourself to the level of abuse that frequently gets hurled around the hallowed halls of Thaivisa, byt the more rumbunctious element herein? I think not.

IMO, sirineou makes a valid point about the potential ammunition some posters give to a wiley thai politician.

The level of interest that Thais exhibit in Thaivisa and its opinions can best be judge by the number of them that take part which, as we've seen in this thread, is vanishingly small. There have been Thais who've joined in the past just to flame some of the more questionable posts that crop up but they don't stay after having their little flame. There's nothing to stop Thais joining up - they just don't do so.

which is a pity, because I would love to read a Thai point of view on many of the topics, especially the cultural ones.

But I reckon many of the Thais participating here have been influenced by western culture, as anyone who spends a long period of time in a foreign country/culture and learns its language.

I wonder why that doesn't seem to be true of most farangs in Thailand?

Thailand changes you, but you have to go back home to see it. It must have changed you since by your posts you seem to hate westerners. Or was that always true?

Don't be ridiculous. Many of my best friends are Westerners.

Try starting a thread about British engineering and Thai engineering and see which gets the most comments.smile.png

C'mon. It's well known that the only reason the UK doesn't make television sets is that they haven't figured out how to make them leak oil. rolleyes.gif

So you're not the only one here with a 60's Triumph.

Ahh, she laughs, but finds it hard to understand why we ask other falang about Thailand instead of asking a Thai.

Your wife does have a very good point. Why would a farang ask another farang about Thailand instead of asking a Thai? You are always better off going to the source rather than getting it second or third hand.wink.png

Because you're unlikely to get a straight answer from a Thai.

They tend to tell you what they think you want to hear.

Anyways, as far as I know TV doesn't have any Thai members.

(A few look Krungs that were raised and educated in the west, plus one or two naturalized, but I don't think that's the people you meant)

Actually Tommo, there are quite a number of Thais who read TV and who are members.

OP: it's well known that Australians dish it out about other countries, but most cannot handle any criticism of their own country.

I disagree, its perhaps well known to you. Its not easy to criticize Australia anyway.

You do realize that you are proving his point? tongue.png

Having lived there, I can tell you, UG, that most think like that. I do agree, however, that it is 'not easy to criticize Australia', it's a stunning country, it's just a shame about the people. They should have sent the ships to Africa and left it for the Abo's. whistling.gif

Sure, and like how would he know there aren't, not even George would know. I wouldn't be surprised if Mark were a member.

It does stand to reason that most Thais wouldn't know about TV as most don't do English... those that do know are typically members' other halves and those that do read English would probably find it boring or would think it's all about visas. If everyone knew about it and it was translated, I think we'd all be on the next boat!
