I have my books and internet. I have been looking at the Re breasted and the red throated flycatcher (Taiga Flycatcher).   The Taiga is darker on my pictures, and on www.avibirds.com they have a picture of a Asian Brown with a wee bit off red under the bill

 

And I went for the Asian brown as they are light grey and the Taiga is darker on the back and wings on the pictures I look at. And my book,   A Field Guide to the Birds of Thailand and South East Asia by Craig Robson, an excellent book. But sometimes it is very hard to identify the birds from the drawings as they look very similar at times. The reason why I like the colourful birds.  I have pretty much given up on the waders.  I also have the A Photographic Guide to Birds of Thailand by Michael Webster and ChewYen <deleted> and it is rubbish, good for nothing, at least not to have in the field.

 

Internet is the way to go and there are so many pictures it makes me confused many times as the same bird can look so different

 

I have already updated my records with the Taiga flycatcher.

 

And thanks to you I found the folder " Birds in my garden"

 

It was both a very pleasant and disappointing experience. So many beautiful birds and I wish we only had one folder for the birds. As this folder have been dead for a long time, until the last two days. 

 

Thanks, and I hope to see you here again. Maybe some of your pictures from the folder " Birds in my garden" will find its way over here. I only see squirrels from my kitchen window and, well, there are quite a few birds a swell.

I live on Sukhumvit Soi 23 and when I look out my living room and kitchen window it is like I live in a forest. But when I go out I'm in the middle of Bangkok. I hope they never built anything next to my kitchen

 

Anyway, as it is my neighbour's garden I can not upload anything to your folder

Anything you see from your property counts in the yard list, whether it's in your neighbor's garden or a distant flyover or half way down the soi. Check out Skeptic7's yard list. He also lives very close to you and right off Sukhimvitt and his yard-list/garden-list is well up in the 50s.

Check Robson, Plate 93. Illustration 7c.

 

"Female non-breeding: Fresh autumn bird. Rump and tail-tip to warm rufous-buff." 

 

My favorite field guide is Lekagul/Round, but I'm at work and I keep a Robson here as I have 2.

 

Also, Oriental Bird Club Images for comparisons is always good as illustrations don't always yield a perfect match.

I was in Suan Buak Hat Chiang Mai this morning with half hour to spend and saw three nice Birds. Scarlet Backed Flowerpecker, which I didn't get a photo.Lineated Barbet and Red Whiskered Bulbul.

I'm sorry but I don't know any. I have never been in a national park. I hope to go to some of the better known ones in the future but for now I am enjoying the surrounding areas of the city.

This is the reason for me to join Thai visa. Well, it was a girl that set me up with Thaivisa back in, God help me, this is almost 14 years ago. Time is quick

 

But after a few days in the NEWS SECTION where everyone was throwing pies at each other I pretty much gave up. Until I ran in to Samuijimmy's bird thread, excellent

 

I will check them out and if I cancel Bali I will come to you after Chiang Mai

 

And if you fancy spending a day in Bangkok looking at the Bryde's whales, 4th biggest rorqual, behind blue, fin and sei whale you just send me an e-mail. I sent you my email via the Thai visa message system

 

I have a room for you and a kitchen where you can make French food or bread. My Thai friends always ask me to buy bread for them when I go to Lao. I try to explain about fresh etc. but in vain

I have used Nick Upton's page several times together with the http://www.norththailandbirding.com  And you are right, an excellent page

 

I was in contact with him for some New Year birding, but as he said: Waste of time to go to a national park during the Christmas/ New Year festivities as they are full of people.

 

I go with my friend in his car or we rent a taxi for a day when we go on our day tours from Bangkok and we visit the places mentioned on the web places.

 

I have only been driving a car once in Thailand and I will NEVER do it again. So when I go beyond the ONE DAY TOUR I try to find a Guide with a car.

 

Thank you for reminding me about Nick, I have used his page so many times I forgot about the Guide service. I will see if he have the time for a day or two in Chiang Mai. And the will hopefully be many pictures we can put in this folder

I shall go to the airport to pick u with my pickup .

 

Driving all sort of vehicles from a little car to a big or huge truck , up to 120 tons, was my job nearly all my life and that everywhere in Europe ;

so, if u can drive without a problem in Greece or in Ukrainia; it's very easy to drive here in Thailand

My friend bought a new motorcycle. We went to the shop in his car and I had two choices:

1) Drive his new motorcycle back to is house

2) Drive his car back to his house

 

I don't know why, but I felt safer driving the car. But believe me, when I parked the car at his house I felt very relieved.

 

I have been on the roads in Greece, luckily enough in the back of a taxi. Never in Ukraine, but in East Germany, in the back of a STASI styled police car.

 

I was in a bar drinking orange juice, early afternoon. Orange juice was only available if you drank it with alcohol. I guess the didn't had much orange juice in the old East Germany. Anyway, the juice tasted "more" and I don't know what happened. Suddenly I saw 4 police cars outside the window and I though that there must be a serious " enemy" of the state in the area. Well, he was better of having some attitude adjustment. Turned out the had come for me. 20 Police men stormed the bar and I was soon in a Police arcade (Lights and sirens on) on my way to prison for attitude adjustment. My road experience form former East Europe 

 

By the way, I have lived in Thailand for,well, for a while. 2 things I never get used to:

1) The driving on the left hand side. Farting along on the left hand side is easy enough, but turning at the intersection and I always end up on the right hand side. And that's even though I have now spent more time with left hand traffic than driving on the right side of the road

 

2) And strange, I always forget the weather. I look out my window, gloom and grey for as long as I can see. The AC is on full blast and I think that it must be a cold day out doors. And surprise, walking in to the wall of heat and humidity.

 

Udon Thani, I stay at the hotel in the Central shopping Mall and last time they had a car and driver for rent. Very convenient.

 

Still in Malaysia and I hope to be in Singapore in 2 or 3 days and from there straight back home to "FUNKY TOWN"

 

I will send you an e-mail when I have more news. By the time we get some bird pictures here. Well, I can put some pictures from my last trip to Udon Thani.

 

 

 

 

Great Egret (Great white heron) and this trip was the trip making me interested in birds in Thailand. So when I came back home I started the birding in Bangkok and beyond.

There is such a profusion of shrikes at the moment.There is also a profusion of names some of which I think overlap.Is this a common woodshrike..a grey backed shrike or something different.

Been to AV camera to buy the GoodsGood GD 140 dry cabinet. Will be delivered tomorrow and I cant wait to get my gear in to the dry cabinet. Anyway, I walked to school and I passed through Lumpini park. Where I spotted a shrike.

 

Thanks to Thaivisa and the birds in my garden folder I have learned a little about Shrikes. And I really wished we only had one bird folder here on Thaivisa.

 

Anyway, thanks to Thaivisa I knew it was a Shrike and I put it down as a Brown Shrike

 

And our Brown Shrike have a friend
