[Myanmar] Burma President’S Office Appoints First Spokesperson

Featured Replies

President Thein Sein has appointed deputy Minister of Information Ye Htut as his office’s new spokesman, the Ministry of Information said on Wednesday. It is the first time that the president’s office has had an official spokesperson. Until now the office’s director, Major Zaw Htay, served as the main media contact person. The move is the latest in a series of steps taken by Thein Sein’s reformist government to relax media restrictions and create more openness about government decision-making. Ye Htut became deputy minister in September, when Information Minister Kyaw Hsan was replaced by Aung Kyi. The latter is seen as more progressive than his predecessor, who oversaw media censorship in Burma until it was lifted last year.
