In a statement released on Sunday, New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) called on Burma’s government to drop charges against nine activists who took part in peaceful but unauthorized protests in September. “The government’s prosecution of peaceful demonstrators reveals troubling limits on Burma’s respect for basic rights,†said Phil Robertson, HRW’s deputy Asia director. The group also said the government should amend the 2011 Law Relating to Peaceful Assembly and Peaceful Procession to meet international human rights standards, including eliminating prison terms for permit violations.
