Am planning a trip to the southern part of Vietnam in the coming weeks. For other reasons, best dates would span the Lunar New Year. Any significant advantages or disadvantages to this timing?

Yes, disadvantage: heavy, heavy traffic out of the cities to the villages as folks go home. Bus and minibus lines and Delta ferries will be packed. It lasts 4-7 days depending on employers. Still, could be interesting cultural experience for you, however.
