I was recently given 5 of these chickens that the former owner simply called 'black chickens' and they came from Mae Hong Son. Can anyone give me the English or Latin name?? They are medium size, a bit on the wild side with their temperament and the combs are black. Rooster may be crossed with a native chicken as he has some gold color on his neck feathers, but the hens are all black with strange shaped combs.

Mods, please give this post a day or 2 on the general forum before moving it to the proper farming forum.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Wife just informed me they are very valauble especially for pregnant women....The meat and the soup made from them is the best you can have.

In a restaurant, you will pay more for that flesh than any other chicken....APPARENTLY. Very expensive.

I think he is referring to cartoon characters, where "Foghorn Leghorn" is the rooster and he is constantly pestered by a dog.

.....or should I just get my coat?

Just tryin' to help.

Cheers.

Yes my wife said that their flesh is actually black in colour and considered a delicacy.

I do recall now that when we were living in Oz and shopping in an asian supermarket, she pointed out some dark looking stuff wrapped in plastic and said it was chicken. Did not look too appealing so I haven't as yet tried it.

Cheers.

The black skin and bones indicate that they are part Silkies but apparently have been cross bred. Silkies are normally white or black with white being the most common. They are smaller than other chickens being between a Bantam and regular size. Check to see if these have five toes. Full blooded very fluffy Silkies are normally kept as ornamental pets. They are usually very tame.

Only 4 toes Gary, but could be a cross with a native Thai breed?? Haven't cut into them yet, so can't attest to their bone or skin color. They do seem to be decent layers with 5 eggs in 2 days from 3 hens. They have no fluffy feathers that silkies are known for....smooth and shinny like normal chickens and judging from images of silkies, their shape is more elongated.....not short and squat.

Please~~~~~~ Let me give you the good answer.

The black chicken are a special breed, black from head to toes, even their eyes are black. I do not know about its breeding history but i can tell you this. In Thailand, not all Thai are the same race, among the Thais there are Chinese ancestry, for as long as i could remember (childhood), Chinese had been cooking a traditional tonic herbal soup called "Black chicken soup" and i have been cooking and eating this soup for as long as i could remember, i have taught my wife the recipe, go to Big C, buy the ready consolidate herbal pack meant for cooking this soup. A good soup should be "Double boiled" in low heat for 1.5-2 hours.

I wouldn't call it a delicacy (being a Chinese) as it's quite a common dish in Singapore and Malaysia, but for foreigner it's a eye opening, very delicious soup if prepare by an excellent chef (me tongue.png ), as it is a "tonic" herbal soup, my mom's advise that i don't take it regularly as it would result in "heatiness of the body" (nose blood) but very good for women during their monthly discharge and pregnancy as one of its ingredient is Chinese Angelicae Root "Dang gui" (当归)

Google "Black chicken soup recipe" for ingredient and cooking method and google "image" for pictures samples.

In the market, that are 2 type of black chickens, one is the pure breed, the other is the mix breed.

The pure breed will have the blackest of skin while the inferior one will have a light black skin.

Where i stay in Chiang Rai, Black chicken are prized and pricey too at ฿130-฿150/kg live weight and sought by hill tribe Chinese of Doi Mae Salong. My neighbour breed and farm them, so i have endless supplies and i really enjoy speaking to hill tribe when they come to buy from him, he is always asking "What the fck are you all talking and laughing about, you guys speaking Chinese and Dialect..." laugh.png

How i would make it.

Add Shitake mushroom if you like, will taste better and for folks who prefer something to mask the herbal sence.

With ginseng for the ultimate health and strong taste.

In a soup specialist restaurant... I ate in this type of restaurant and paid SGD$25 for the type in the picture. Delicious ! With 2 bowl of rice ! thumbsup.gif
