The cabinet on Monday agreed to assign Mae Sot as a pilot economic zone, paving the way for over 10 other districts in the country which have also been proposed as special economic zones. Tak provincial authorities have submitted a number of budget requests for infrastructure development projects targeting to accommodate the economic expansion in the Thai-Myanmar border area. The planned development of Mae Sot into a special economic zone is also part of the country’s preparation for the ASEAN Single Window system, which aims to facilitate trade among the 10 ASEAN member nations. The single window for the bloc is expected to maximize traders’ efficiency through time and cost savings. -- NNT 2013-01-21
