I have a three year old asus A42J which my screen keeps going black repeatably. Have checked power and set everything to never. Have checked cable, taken out battery and reinstalled and disconnected and connected power supply.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Check Power settings in Control Panel ... it may be set to go into power saver mode or into hibernation...

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options

If the above doesn't work then you need to check your graphics card properties (come back for help if needed)....but I think JDGRUEN is on the money.

I have put it in to high power and made no difference. How do you check graphic card properties.?

Thanks for your input. The screen has gone black 2 times in the last minute.

hook up an external monitor and run with both on. if the internal screen goes dark, and the external stays alive, that says you have a hardware problem. if both screens go dark, it is most likely software. For hardware, well, there is PanTip Plaza techs, and for software, perhaps a full wipe and reinstall of the OS. best of luck!

Turned both screens on and both went off at the same time. I have just recently installed win 8 and meant to do a clean install as i was having problems with slow startup but stuffed it up. sounds like might have to get right this time. Not looking forward to it.

Thanks.

Are there graphics card drivers for your card for Windows 8?

Yes have already updated the drivers. Just about tried all except clean install.

Sorry, just got your response as I posted. Have you done a FULL driver removal for your card? NVidia have been having some problems with driver upgrade routes and many people are looking at COMPLETE removal to make sure they give their drivers a clean install.

Your 'screen going black' - but coming back on by moving your mouse is simply due to a setting that you can easily change. There are 2,3 or 4 different places to look so I will post back as soon as I locate the ones I locate.

Thanks for all the info, i should have mentioned i have the older model with the ati radeon 5000 series. I did do an uninstall and put the latest drivers in. At the moment i am doing a reset for win 8 and both screens are staying on. You are right about reloading everything again, it is a time consuming business.

Right click on Power icon. Select Power Options.

Choose the plan you want (I usually go High Performance as I'm usually plugged in).

Select "Change Plan Settings".

Change the settings for "Dim Display" and "Turn Off Display" to suit your requirements.

You might also want to change "Turn Off the Computer" and, in the advanced options, what happens when you close the lid.

Ended up doing a reset and so far so good. I find win8 quite good after you work out its quirks.

Thanks to everyone for thier inputs.

Install Classic shell if you don't have a touchscreen, then you get the best of both worlds.

I had the same problem once with a Sony VAIO, after some research I found that the problem was the backlight of the screen, I went to SONY service center w/o warranty they fixed and charged 800 B.
