[Myanmar] Burma Military Launches English-Language Newspaper

Burma’s powerful military launched an English-language version of its Myawaddy newspaper on Tuesday, adding another propaganda outlet to the group of media organizations it controls. The army, which has no shortage of funds, now controls the Burmese-language Naypyidaw Newspaper, the Mandalay-based daily Yadanabon News, Myawaddy Publications and Myawaddy TV. Burma’s military has a long history of generating propaganda for the Burmese public. Its Propaganda and Psychological Warfare Unit published the first issue of the Myawaddy Magazine in 1952 to counter anti-military leftist publications. Burma’s quasi-civilian government controls another three papers, The New Light of Myanmar in English, Myanma Alin and the Mirror in Burmese.
