Bangkok to stay cool till end of Feb

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok will enjoy a relatively cool spell until the end of next month, according to the Meteorological Department's deputy director-general Somchai Bai-muang.

Temperatures in Bangkok's Bang Na district, where the department is headquartered, hovered around 19.3 degrees Celsius on one day recently. It was the lowest level for this year to date.

"Other parts of the country, except the South, will also stay cool until the end of February," Somchai said.

He explained that this was because the cool season had started rather late this time.

"Normally, the weather starts getting cool in late November, but this time it started in late December," he explained.

Somchai linked cool temperatures with the recent fog that has been covering the capital.

"There will be fog on and off like this for a while, very likely until the end of February," he said.

The meteorologist explained that when cool air meets warm or hot air, fog is formed if the high-pressure ridge is not strong enough. "The fog disappears when the cool and dry air mass chases away the humidity," he said, adding that fog formation and fog dispersal will take place every five or seven days until the temperatures rise.

Somchai dismissed any suggestion that the cool weather this month was a result of the La Nina phenomenon. "Perhaps it's a result of climate change, but it is not drastic," he said, adding that the fog was not bad enough to affect flights.

In fact it's so dry up here that I can see the possibility of drought. I have never seen the water level in Ubonrat dam so low in over 10 years.

The past week it's been horribly humid here in Bangkok.

One of my clients up country has had to cut down production, because their water supply from a large river fed pond, has virtually dried up.

Great news, particularly for our recently laid turf. After 3 days with no "blue pipe" mains water - the borehole ran dry - it's pouring down here on Route 21!

Not to be a nimby, but, we never have a flooding problem where we are. But in reality, I think it is fair to say that many parts of Isaan are officially in drought. Rainy season last year was short, and if this stable weather continues until the end of Feb, there is going to be big trouble with water. The levels in the rivers and the damns up in Isaan that I've seen is very low, so it would have to rain an awful lot just to fill up the capacity again.

Here in Thailand probably anything under 21C outside. Mind you, mostly I tend to get cold inside offices only

(just to be sure: Khet Dusit is a district in Bangkok which includes Chitralada Palace, Government House, Dusit Zoo a.o.)

Had been nice and cool outside Korat until past few days, got much warmer, but up until then, bedroom windows open, fan, great sleeping weather.

I saw a chicken laying on our lawn yesterday afternoon (it was a pretty warm day), was on its side and had one of his legs stretched out. Wife's mom said it means cool weather coming, and today..... nice and cool again, nice breeze going.

I knew similar chicken behavior in the summer means rain coming, which I've seen come to fruition as well.

Anyone reckon these chickens can sense pressure changes? Great barometers, but it would be nice if they would stop crapping on my kitchen patio tile.

My chickens are great barometers and temperature sensors too, at 180 degrees celsius they are usually lying on their back featherless in a baking tray going a nice golden brown. They no longer crap on the patio either

It was 10.7C this morning here in Chiangdao. We are 500 metres above sea level and this is quite normal for this time of year.

The lowest I've experienced here was 8C a few years ago.

Global warming resulting in cooling Thailand.

Cold weather? I'm sweating my ass off!!! I've been living in Thailand for almost 10 years now and for the past 2 years there was no cool season, at least not in BKK!!!

Cool weather???? Ah wait relatively.....relative to what? A furnace? An overheated engine? Hell's gates? Ok maybe not the last one but..... cool weather? Don't think so.

The weather in southern SiSaket province has been just gorgeous for 6 weeks now. Dry as a bone, sunny skies, a nice breeze (Chiang Mai and Bangkok eat your heart out - went to Bangkok 2 weeks ago and the skies were thick and yukky) and very temperate.

Long may it last. Long may Central Plainers continue to look down on us and avoid our wonderful climate

Huge, unseasonal gulley washer type downpours yesterday afternoon between Chonburi and Pattaya causing big tailbacks on Highway 7 as flooded feeders forced all traffic back onto the highway. Highway 36 turnoff to Rayong at the highway 7 spur was also gridlocked due to deep water further down the hill.There was standing water (and traffic!) on the usual low spots on Sukhumvit. Running about a foot deep in lower parts of Naklua. I was watching the municipal workers emptying the kerbside garbage pails into the back of the dump truck then the empty pails floating away across the street causing an additional obstacle to the stalled car or flooded motorcycle being pushed through the flood. Looked like something from last September!
