Hi,

I will be moving to chiang mai from sydney in the next 6months to trade forex. I only trade the Eur/usd and IG is my broker.

I would appreciate any information from other traders regarding the Internet speed in chiang mai and of any good Thai forex brokers where spread is no more then 1.7pip.

I ask these 2 questions as all traders know fast & reliable Internet speed is crucial and also as my broker is in Australia not keen to pay tax on hard earn money if I'm not even living there.

Any advise or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Moving this from the SME forum to the Chiang Mai forum. I think you'll get better replies about the local internet speed there.

You could trade just eur.usd over a dial-up modem. It's not speed you need but low latency.

Think about the flow of information... London Trade Desk >300ms> Sydney Broker >175ms> Thailand > Your Quote / Your Order > Thailand >175ms> Sydney Broker >300ms> London Trade Desk.

That's 0.95 Seconds total over a fixed line before taking into account delays at IG Index or your decision time.

You can check the actual bandwidth requirements, and see how much speed you really do use/need when you are connected to your broker, using a free windows app called Networx. http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/

Hi RandomS,

That's a very good point. What do you think is the best solution in reducing latency?

HI Jayman, how much does it cost to set up a VPS to trade. I am planning on moving to thailand to trade for 6 months.

Well, guess it depends on the VPS provider you use. I use CNS and they are one of the most reliable in the industry. You can choose to have you account on either they UK, NYC, or SDCA data server. You chose based on where you broker is located. Obviously you want to be as close to the broker server as possible for the lowest latency. From the NYC data center to many of my brokers my ping is <1ms.

They have arrangements with many brokers that allow you free service if you turn enough lots and maintain a min balance set by the broker.

After going there click on the link for

HI Jayman, Thanks for the info. I have read through there website. I trade with 4 monitors. If I download my brokers software onto the VPS. Would I still be able to use my 4 monitors to trade with and does it not matter what internet connection you have got in Thailand, feedback appreciated.

Well, if you trade from the VPS the idea is that you install the trading client on your vps and execute orders from there and they are sent to the broker. The whole reason for doing this is that the latency from the VPS DC to the brokers trade server will be fractions of what it would be direct from Thailand.

Now you say you have 4 monitors and I must assume that is for charts. There is no reason to open charts on the VPS, those you can still run from your home system. You only run the trade client on the VPS and use that to place orders. Some ppl run automated trade strategies that require a constant and reliable connection. That is another reason to use a VPS.

Without knowing more what you are trying to do I cannot give you more specific advice. What broker do you trade with? What platform do you use to place orders? What platform do you use for charting? What platform do you use for trade management? For some, all of the last 3 questions are answered with the same software. For me personally, I use different software to do my chart analysis and trade management. Only the trade management stuff need be run from the VPS.

Jayman thanks for the info. I use Tradestation for US Stocks and Oanda for Forex. The 4 monitors is mainly for charts. Makes a lot of sense to just use the VPS for the trade management. Can you recommend a good high speed internet which is stable to run my trading software.

I'm be honest Simon I live in Pattaya. I use TRUE docsis (coax cable based) service which is available in my area. I get 15M/1.5M + 72 cable channels fro 900thb a month.

That seems to be plenty fast and reliable for my entire home network. I used to use ADSL and that is adequate as well but less reliable.

Jayman, to get the True Docsis service how long is the contract you need to sign. Thanks for all the info.

I signed a 1 year contract to qualify for the promotion I signed up for which got me free equipment and install. I bet you could do it without the 1 year contract but will have to put out more money. The other option is to check what the early termination fee is and if you need less than the contract period decide if the termination fee is better than paying for the remaining service period.
