[Myanmar] Rohingyas Get 6-Month Reprieve In Thailand

Featured Replies

A group of 1,390 Rohingya refugees who are staying in Thailand will be allowed to stay for another six months, until Thailand, Burma and other countries agree on what should be done with them, the Bangkok Post reports. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees and other international agencies had urged Thailand to provide the group temporary refuge. Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said the Rohingya might be repatriated to Burma, adding that Thailand would hold talks with the Burmese on their fate. Thousands of Muslim Rohingyas have been fleeing west Burma in boats to escape violent clashes with local Buddhist communities in recent months.
