President Thein Sein provided the Burmese with an overview of recent developments and reform measures planned by his government in a radio broadcast on Friday. He highlighted the importance of more than US $6 billion in international debt relief that Burma received last weekend, which will help it obtain news loans. “Funds of millions of dollars [of loans] will be used for … poverty alleviation for country development, construction of schools, hospitals, roads and bridges, power generation and supply of potable water,†he said, adding that starting small and medium enterprise and providing agricultural loans were other government priorities. Thein Sein said that government cooperation with Burma’s nascent civil society sector was also important.
