why live on an island and stay in a town??

Why live in Thailand if you want a Western neighbourhood?

I live in Kamala an all my neighbors are Thai's or rubber treesthumbsup.gif it not like kata, karon, rawaii or Patong that the Farangs have taken over and the thai's that do work there don't live there

To each his own and we all look for the best for ourselves

I love generalizations. Your area of Kamala has rubber trees and Thais. My area of Rawai has banana trees, mango, papaya, coconut and yes; Thais that have been here for generations... Whatever.

It's the Lunar New Year on Sunday, and there are a lot of Chinese tourists here. And yes the roads have been "mad" for years and getting worse!

It may well be that Notsostupid30's partner is going to work at Bangkok Hospital, hence looking for somewhere close to there.

I can't think of anywhere within Phuket island that's more than 15 to 20 minutes from a beach. The closer you are to a beach, the more you'll pay for accommodation, food, drinks etc. All down to priorities and likes I guess. I like to go to a beach occasionally (or at least a restaurant next to one), but wouldn't consider staying next to one. Living in say Rassada, which is 5 minutes from Bangkok Hospital, is only around 5 minutes from Koh Siray where there are some good beaches etc.

Im curious where? Those beaches are littered with garbage/rocks/broken bottles from what i have seen. My kids would glady hear of those good spots if you know them.

Main reason to stay in town IMO is a 90% increase in survival if you need a quick hospitalization. South + ambulance = accident or stuck in traffic.

Close to everything and going to a southern restaurant/beach feels like a holiday yet its just 15-30mins away depending on traffic. It allows you not to get used to the beach and scenery too much.

last important reason is being close to TOPS and central food hall. Villa is overpriced and small tescos have nothing good.

IMO you can eat and drink in the Kata area for 120 bht for lunch and about 250 for dinner. We eat where the Locals eat, sometime yes you feel like being ripped off but very few times. I don't live here full time but I find the Thai's very nice and friendly, always w/ a smile. Los is still Los. Find a new place a check it out, this place is better than many other area's IMO. Aloha

Koh Sirey has good beaches, as does Cape Panwa, particularly Ao Yon and Khao Khad. Also safe to swim there year round, unlike the west coast beaches.

Can you name one on koh sirey so i can look it up? Have driven around often and never found any beach that i could swim in.

No names, but in the general area of the Westin Hotel. There's one particular restaurant that has a pony wandering around, and the beach next to that.

This reply that I'd made got me thinking that I'd actually taken some photos of the restaurant and ponies the last time that we were there. Here they are, along with some of the beach opposite, and of the type of food available. If you've got kids, could be they'd enjoy going there:

Cheers! Welcome to Phuket. Take some time to chill out and check out the many different areas, until you find one that you might like. There's no hurry, you've already found a place you can stay while you explore your other possibilities...

I went there today and did not really see any beaches to swim. Well there was one tiny one, which was well hidden from visitors.

The area itself was interesting. Sea gypsy village (longer story here http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/613994-beer-in-thailand/page__st__25#entry6099850 )

People were nice and happy. Area worth of visiting.

View from abandoned construction site, Koh Sire.

Uninfinity pool (or should I say Lim->0 pool). The tide was low today due new moon.
