Security measures tightened ahead of Chinese NY

Narathiwat authorities have strengthened safety measures for the upcoming Chinese New Year when tourists from Malaysia are expected to flock into the province to celebrate.

Narathiwat Governor Apinun Suetananuwong has ordered the combined forces in 13 districts of the province to increase their security measures to prevent any possible attempts to instigate unrest during the Chinese New Year celebrations.

During this period, Chinese in Malaysia usually cross the border to celebrate the event, particularly in Muang Sungai Kolok, which is home to a shrine of the Toh Moh Goddess.

The governor ordered special protection for the district as well as Narathiwat municipality, which has a large ThaiChinese community.

Police were told to keep a close watch and to screen vehicles after being tipped off that four stolen vehicles would be used in car bomb attacks.

Immigration officials would also strengthen their measures in the belief that suspects with arrest warrants may go across the border to instigate attacks.

Those who want to celebrate by lighting firecrackers or fireworks have to notify and get permission from the authorities.
