[Myanmar] Broaden Mandate Political Prisoners Committee: Rights Group

Amnesty International has welcomed the decision by Burma’s President Thein Sein to form a committee to review the political prisoner cases, but said the committee should have broader investigative powers. “We are heartened by this very important first step … However, it is imperative to have assurances that the mandate of this new committee will extend to all prisoners who have been unfairly detained, not only political prisoners,†Isabelle Arradon, Amnesty’s Asia Pacific deputy director said in a statement. “We are waiting for clear commitments that the commission will be independent, impartial, properly resourced, and their decisions based on international human rights standards,†she added.
