Hand To Mouth.........

I have really only known of one farang who truly hit the skids here, and I really don't think I can put the blame on him for it. He ran a local bar/restaurant with his Thai wife. He was doing well, so well in fact... that he moved to a larger premises. He made sure that all his customers knew where he was moving to (less than half a KM). Strange thing was, nobody really followed him there. I would ask the other expats why I never saw them going in there much, they didn't seem to know why. They just for some reason thought the spark was not in this place that was in the other.

Anyhow, they struggled to pay the bills etc etc.... and in true Thai style, his wife dumped him and left him 'holding the baby'.

He lost his house to the wife and blah blah.... you heard it all before.

But this guy, never went home to Germany... I would see him sitting outside a mom and pop shop drinking a 42 baht Chang, and moaning about his situation. I did what I could to help him out, as did a few of the other locals, and he stayed here and there, crashing in spare rooms, and I believe he was getting some assistance from his parents who would have helped him out a lot more by buying a plane ticket for him.

Last I heard, he is hanging out in BKK. I really hope he is well. A lot of us got a bit concerned about him because he really did spiral downhill. Hard to watch. But I doubt he would go home, even though I tried to drum it into him, to go back to Germany and regroup. Get some work for 6 months and come back and try again. But alas, he would rather be here broke it seems, than face 6 months back home... funny that.

I think there are a lot of folks flying by the seat of their pants hoping things will get better before they get worse... reminds me of when I was first here, and kidding myself. Sometimes people will choose the path of least resistance, no matter what the outcome.

I know who you are talking about but a lot of the facts of this story have been twisted. Perhaps you received the wrong information from the person in question but him loosing that restaurant had nothing to do with a lack of customers. He ran that place with his GF, not wife. And the house he lost as he wasn't making the mortgage payments as he was pissing it all away.

All I know, is that I would go down there quite a bit, sure there were times when there was a few in there, especially when there was football on worth watching, but most of the time there was only me and one or two others. Seemed to me that he was doing much better business up the road and need not have moved.

He always called her his wife when talking to me.

But if what you are saying is true, then I am not totally shocked. Funny thing is.... regardless of what the real facts were. After it went tits up, I offered to help him out by bank rolling a new restaurant for him as long as he followed my business model. I was willing to put in 200K, more out of help than of business sense. But if he used the correct formula and chased the correct market then I should have seen some return, and he would have had his life back on track. But to my amazement he turned it down.

A fool and his money are soon parted. Can I offer a few business plans to help unload you of your embarrassing cash stash?

NO!

Why? because I am not the fool you think I am.

Are you an impersonator? Indeed more realistic than the genuine article. Edited by Denizen

His girlfriend closed down the place as the person in question would be too drunk to be able to run the kitchen half the time. He would also disappear days at a time. The reason why he lost control of his life was his alcoholism. Many people told me they helped him out. Funnily enough they seemed to think that buying a few beers would be classified as help which obviously is not the case if you are buying beers for an alcoholic. He is living off a disability pension which gives him about 30-40 k a month and most of it goes to beer and fags. I feel sorry for the guy, i really tried to help him (finding a job, place to crash, legal assistance etc but after trying for 3 years I am slowly giving up hope.

Well as you know him, you must also know the old Canadian guy. He is really a lost case.

You make me ill

Who appointed you the farang spending authority?

This place was great until these old, fat slobs showed up with their money.

Half million baht for three months living. Disgusting.

Your money will never = my experience.

I've been living in Asia for twenty years, never taken a baht from anyone.

I left at 33 to explore the world, not wait till I'm good as dead, every great experience turned into a shopping mall, in need of a packet of Viagra to keep a stiffy, grateful or any hag of a woman that will pay me mind.

You stayed at home, played it safe, squirreled away your money, left your fat wife, found Thailand...now it is you we shall bow low.

Thailand is now safe for you. Shopping malls w full ac, resorts, aircon, toilet paper, ice, western toilets, cold beer and cheap third world prostitutes.

Maybe all the poor Thai's should just kill themselves too? Oh, but then who would serve and service you.

Totally appalled.

If you ate so aghast, perhaps you can buy them all tickets home.

There are cheap medications for constipation which would benefit you. However your mental constipation has no cure other than getting your blood alcohol level up to 0.3+. Next morning you will have forgotten what you were drinking to forget.

If these men who are observed are in the age of 55 years or above and from the USA... I know why they would be in such a situation. With the economy as it is in the U.S. and with a real jobless rate pushing 20% (not the 8% propaganda the government hands out) then one 'goes to where the weather suits my clothes" as sang in Margaritaville. In the U.S. we have employment Age Discrimination laws that are practically never enforced by anyone. Since 2008 millions of men and women over age 55 have lost their jobs. And as a sobering practical matter these people will never get a professional job again. It would seem that homelessness will increase in places like Thailand - at least there people won't freeze at night sleeping under a tree.

No they won't freeze, but they will get eaten alive by mosquitos, I don't know which is the worst.

Entertaining stuff that........Meltdown Of The Day laugh.png

Imagine coming online to boast about leaving to explore the World at 33 cheesy.gif

Back in your box laddie......I completed my THIRD expat stint at the age of 27, on this forum you're surrounded by guys that crawled through the jungle's of SE Asia fighting for their lives at the age of 19, expats that trammelled across SE Asia on the Hippie Trail, went bouncing around Boogie Street when it actually had a soul, went bevvying like mad men in steamy Hong Kong, in among the many old timers that can remember what life was actually like in Thailand in the 60's/70's/80's because.......they were here!!

...........and yet you think travelling to see the World at 33 make's you something special. Wow.

Can I get your autograph? coffee1.gif

Anyway, back to the topic, it may well be the case that some people have decided that to live in Thailand without an income is the way to go, however the Thai authorities don't seem to share that view. There may be trouble ahead.

I feel bad about never exploring the world and never going anywhere exotic. I suppose my experience as a humble wage-slave is irrelevant, and I should keep my ill-founded opinions to myself. Notwithstanding that, I think my experience in the suburbs is no less Thailandish than life in the boondocks or lower Sukhumvit.

If a chap's been living in Thailand for a while, then he'll not be au fait with the mores of a country that he may have left many years ago, and I think Thailand is a far cheaper place to be poor than the UK; can't comment about others' home countries. Again, if he's been here a while, it's quite likely that he'll have lost contact with his friends from his youth, and his parents may have passed on as well. There's several amongst us who have no descendants on whom they could descend.

bangkokburning has every right to his personal point of view without being ganged up on here.

Says who? Who made you the arbiter of free speech?

I have no objection to him holding whatever view he wishes, but if he publishes it in the forum, then people may be inclined to comment on his views, or the way in which he presents them.

It appears that several people hold similar opinions on the way in which he has expressed his views, and the number of people who are willing to express such opinions may be considered relevant to the discussion.

SC

It's good to remind us that people have personal views and that they can be challenged, without destroying the conversation. It would not be so good, by the nature of a forum like this, if challenging means the end of the story. That's all I'm saying.

You really do make me ill.

Most, most, most of the guys on this forum had no thought of Thailand, absolutely ZERO clue until 10 years ago. I saw the wave as early as the Internet (boom 97) when "sex tours" became popular. Years after word sort of got out that yeah, Thailand is safe enough for a diy sex holiday.

Meanwhile, I'd lived in Cambodia for a number of years starting pre UNTAC election. I'd been up in Lao as early as Feb 95, was in Vietnam well before diplomatic ties were established with my country. been to Myanmar multiple times (first traveler to stay in New Bagan) and traveled all around Pakistan in 97. If I had a solid travel partner, I would have gone to Afghanistan.

You don't know shit about these countries, otherwise you would not discount my age and story. Lao, Vietnam and Cambodia all fresh and new again and I was there and you obviously were NOT.

I had traveled a great deal in the US by age 12. By 18 I had seen most of Mexico and made multiple trips to Baja. I stopped traveling to put myself through school. I graduated, then got right back on the road after making some money.

Very, very few guys here fought in Vietnam and most did were just grunts although they will all tell you they were tunnel rats, macvsog, spooks, etc...

Fewer still as we can see were hippies, real hippies. Fewer still made it to Asia and looking at the recent thread -essentially none made in to Thailand. Why? Because it was where the war was, not the party. In fact, the party was in California - where I lived.

Please spare me the lecture and the World History course.

You are so typical of the <deleted> in Thailand, neigh the world now. Hooray for me, the hell with you.

Do you look on all people that did not inherit wealth and title as you did as bums and miscreants or just white people?

You attitude is very, very, very unThai. Which questions why you are even here. Answer...like the po' folk because its CHEAP. Lets face it, if you were a real man of any means you be in south Europe on a yacht not hanging out in cheap restaurants that stumblebums frequent.

Go home.

Tender affection? Or whistling in the dark?

I thought it was maybe a "One too many soor plooms" smiley. Or maybe a "sucking through the teeth 'you don't want to do that, mate'" smiley.

Probably best not to go any further or David48 and Ray French will be on at me for speculation.

If I could find it, I'd use the "Let sleeping dogs lie" gif....

You hide your charm extremely well.

Unlike you or theblether, I do not have so much to be modest about, but I don't really think that your entertaining exploits render my own experience void or worthless.

SC

EDIT: I still don't know who you're having a go at. Our members from the Small Business chamber of commerce? Our retired fellows? Our expatriate professional workers? I don't know anyone from the landed gentry on this forum...

Anyway, whilst we're all boasting about our foreign exploits, I travelled to six countries and two continents before I was a year old. Probably.

bleater completely lost me when he said he 'claims it back from my companies'. How the hell does that equate to 'paying my own way' ?? It's like one of the Directors of a company I used to work for in Brisbane making a big deal about buying a bunch of my workmates drinks one night at a club in the city (after a work function), to the point of holding his credit card up for all to see. I knew it was too good to be true and, sure enough, his secretary told me he submitted an expense claim for every cent.

Personal expenses should be exactly that - personal expenses. Using big alcohol bills as a tax dodge went out sometime in the early 90s here in Oz ...

I don't know about any other country. But in the US if you own your own business, you can deliberately set it up so that you must travel. Simply have business involvement in two places, or travel for continuing education (a weekend seminar of mostly golfing) or any business related travel such a traveling to meet a partner or customer, and you can deduct it from income as an expense. Then it is a tax deduction. Tax evasion is a crime, tax avoidance is gloriously legal if legally planned.

So when I travel, I make d@mn sure it's for business purposes. Then my every cost is deductible, only up to a point for food and booze. But I can take a generous per diem for "food" and not have to account for it with receipts. I'm simply allowed a fixed amount.

So yes, even though my business is now scaled back and not so big, I can still use tax avoidance in those ways. I can lose money every year for up to 3 years and write the loss off against my other income such as social security and investment income.

Not in any way do I see Bletherer as exaggerating.

If you have a friend who is a British MP ask him or her how to deal with expenses, they have it all down to a tee.

There is a bloke on Sukhumvit soi 7-8 living rough, constantly drinking. Cuts all over his legs and he gets looks of pitty from, both Thais and Westerners.

As for living on 5500 baht a day for a hoilday its is easily doable in the right area. Udon Thani 1000 baht will get you a hotel with large room, pool, gym good food. Transport round town a few hundred baht or hire a car for 800 baht a day. Many good retaurants but no taley sad.png

Go to Phuket I hear their prices are reasonable tongue.png

You mean the Tuk Tuk drivers?

Funny thread;

Blether starts off wondering why people sometimes have to live hand to mouth in Thailand.

He knows he is inviting a sh** storm of responses as the post is short and in my opinion looks down on people who are struggling. He waits for the responses to start rolling in, waits for the first person to challenge him...

and then... BAM! out comes the claims of wealth and genealogical superiority.

Well now it makes sense!!

If I was born into wealth I too would struggle to understand how/why people can live hand to mouth. 10 pages later, I don't think any words will replace what experience can teach.

I suggest a charity be started to send some of these sad penurious British losers back to UK where they can live like royalty for pennies.

Perhaps Thailand can levy a tax on visas for British travelers to fund the return of these sad penurious British losers back to UK.

let us hope you are a permanent Denizen of Thailand.
