Ed Visa With Letter From Moe For Wrong Country

Featured Replies

Hi,

We are in Koh Samui.

Already had 1 year ED visa last year.

We came again on a 30 days tourist visa.

Our school have our MOE (Ministry Of Education) letter ready. To get 1 year ED Visa.

But this letter is for Paris embassy, they made mistake. We want to go Penang.

Do you think Penang embassy can accept such letter?

Our tourist visa expire in 5 days :(

Thanks

No - and do not believe any local Embassy/Consulate would (even if addressed to them). The normal issue is single entry and you then extend inside Thailand presenting proof of attendance.

Hi,

Sorry I don t understand.

Previous ED Visa we had letter ATTN Paris and got the visa in Paris

Then was stamped entering in Thailand

Now same thing BUT letter is ATTN Paris and we plan to go Penang.

Is there any chance Penang accepts a letter ATTN Paris?

Thanks

Consulates in the area do not normally issue multi entry non immigrant ED visas (one year) but only issue single entry for one 90 day stay which you then extend inside Thailand with the proper paperwork. As I said above it is not likely to be accepted by Penang for anything and at best a single entry.

Thanks for your answer. Yes I understand. Last time coming from Paris we had 90 days yes, to extend 3 times.

Ok I will try to call Penang. In fact MOE did a city mistake in the cover letter so school will try to get new letter by fax...

Our visa expire monday, 25th, which is a day off.

We have now 30 days tourist visa. Can you remind me if it is extensible at immigration, and also confirm that, if letter of MOE doesn't arrive soon, we can still have 15 days extension crossing border by land?

Thanks

Believe you have a 30 day visa exempt entry rather than a tourist visa and that can not be extended (although you can always get 7 days to depart). Yes you can exit/return by land for 15 days or return by air for 30 days.

As you now seem to be talking about a single entry visa rather than one year I would suggest you call a Consulate and ask if they can accept. It is mainly the one year that I am sure you would not get.

Thanks for your answer. Yes right now I have 30 days visa exempt. I may choose 7 days extend or cross by land.

About ED visa I am sure I can have it. At least maybe not 1 day just when issued but 90 days extension 3 times. I already had it no problem when you have all papers ok. Only thing I doubt is good letter with right city name (Penang in my case) can take a few days to arrive, more than my 5 remaining days.

Can you please clarify what I should ask the consultate?

Thanks

As you are already on visa exempt status you may as well wait for the new letter and that way you can be sure - even with a phone call it could be different at the Consulate when you arrive so best to have right name on document before making the trip.

Sure. When my visa expire, I plan to do a border cross. Or to wait outside the country until school send me the letter.

I won t go to Consulate without the right letter...

Whatever else, I will agree with Kuhn L on one thing: If you call a consulate -- any consulate -- and get an answer to a query, there is no guarantee that the person who gave you that answer will be there when you actually show up and the person that you actually end up with on the matter may have an entirely different opinion on the same original query.

However, if you are already outside the country and waiting for your new letter, there is no harm in going to the Penang Consulate and see if they will accept the letter you have in hand. I would tell them it was your original plan to go back to Paris but circumstances have changed rather than making a big to do about any foul-up by other parties. Makes the thing more pleasant for all concerned. And this may save you a bit or a lot of time hanging out ex-Thailand awaiting a revised letter.

Very good advice. In all case on monday, with the new letter or not, I will leave and wait outside (or land 15 day cross). And yes I will try with the Paris letter :-)

Thanks.....!

If you go to Penang and they do not accept the letter you could then apply for a tourist visa which would give you a 60 day entry that can be extended for 30 days.

You can go to school on a tourist visa.

Yes... Good idea. But then we will have to go again for the ED visa... And the letter I believe expires in 30 days...

So my choice are

1 - pray to get the letter within 48hours

2 - do a land cross giving 15 more days and wait at home in Samui

2 - do a 7 days extension at immigration

4 - wait in Penang for the letter... and yes can try to use the Paris letter at Penang, nothing to loose....

Thanks!

Don't forget Monday is a holiday.....ref post number 12, the Embassy/Consulate might not be open.
