Craiglist And Amazon Equivalent - What Do You Use?

Recommended Posts

When I was living in the US I would use Craiglist to find a second hand bike or to sell a mattress. What equivalent would you use here in Thailand?

Also I am looking to buy a water floser, similar to this. Normally I would use Amazon to buy something like this. What would you use in Thailand?

I am for other products as well, so I'm not specifically looking for a bike and water floser, they were just examples.

Thank you in advance.

Still use Amazon as they deliver to Thailand as well. For other classifieds, TV Classifieds, CityLife Classifieds, Craiglist, BahtSold, CMCCC classifieds email, Dealfish Chiang Mai.

I *REALLY* want to order stuff from Amazon, but I've heard sooooo many horror stories about dealing with Thai Customs. Have you not had any problems? Any tips you can share about ordering from Amazon and not having the items overly taxed or held up in Thai Customs?

Thanks,

Sorry, no tips. its really a toss up. Sometimes you get a nice little bill saying you owe xxxx and sometimes you don't. I've found as an all around rule though, that FedEx, DHL, and UPS almost always require an additional tax payment of some sort. Where standard mail (i.e. USPS) is only about 1 out of 10 times.

That's more or less my experience too. Though I would add that I don't believe I've had any horror stories. There is a tax on certain products, and with regular mail things more often slip through without the appropriate tax levied, while with DHL, etc., things never do. Many countries have a smaller or greater tax on imported products, and so does Thailand. Nothing very special about that in my opinion.

Never had any tax for stuff ordered from Amazon, though I think I've only ordered books. Probably had it shipped by regular mail always, though could be it would be the same had I used DHL, as I don't think there a duty to be paid on importing books for personal use.

The government actually has a website, with English even, you can use to see what the duty is on various products:

When ordering from Amazon you have to pay extra, sometimes a lot extra, for the overseas shipping. Other than that, I've never had a problem with books from Amazon. However Amazon won't ship a lot of stuff they sell to Thailand. If you find what you want at a decent price on Amazon, try initiating the purchase with your Thailand delivery address. They'll let you know if they won't ship it, and you will see the shipping charges and have the option of cancelling the purchase if they're too high.

Recently looking at some "old man" slippers on Amazon. Dunlop slippers at $22 looked good value so ordered 2 pairs, that is until the shipping costs appeared, $62!

You guessed right,I did not proceed. Plus I believe footwear can attract 40 percent duty here as well?

if you don't like the "deal" on shipping with amazon...there are various "trans-shippers" who will receive your package(s) and ship to anyplace in the world for you... via USPS or fedex or whatever you want...

google it

Why not use the Thai websites for buying stuff? After all you are in Thailand. If you can't find an English language book at Gecko or one of the others eBay will probably have it. If not now, try again in a week or two.

Please post a list of such English language websites, if there are any. I have never found any.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to order direct from Amazon without getting screwed.

I order from Amazon all the time, but have orders delivered to a friend in a "no sales tax state" in the US and have him reship to me in a plain used box. I have ordered thousands of dollars worth of stuff this way and have never paid one baht in tax.

However, you must have the stuff reshipped by POST ONLY, and you must go on the USPS website and study all the international shipping options. It is a bit of an art to find the best rate. For example, if you can put the item in a padded envelope, you can ship by first class, which is much cheaper than putting it into a box and being forced into the Priority Mail rates. With Priority Mail, if the thing is quite heavy, you are usually better off using a "flat rate box." On the other hand, if the item is lightweight (like the "old man slippers"), it is usually cheaper to use a plain box and the Priority rate based on weight.

I was looking for a craiglist alternative because I wanted to buy a second hand mountain bike.

I saw there was a Craiglist Bangkok but not for Chiang Mai.

On ThaiVisa.com classifieds I only found motorcycles or scooters and

On Bahtsold.com I get motorbikes when I search for 'bikes' and 1 mountain bike and tons of apartments when I search for 'cycle'

Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong? Or somewhere that might have a mountain bike for around $100/$200 (I've seen them brand new for $300)

I always see second hand bikes being sold on the Secondhand Chaingmai Facebook group mentioned above...

Used bicycle don't have a large active market on the classifieds sites. You may be better off checking out the local bike shops as many of them will have "pre-used" bikes. Also. depending on what bike you are talking about $100 - $200 is a good price for a good mountain bike. Really high-end Mt bikes cost much much more.

Good Luck!

For that budget you could buy a mountain bike new. Not a high-end one but a decent one with Shimano, etc. parts on it. I got my mountain bike at Song Jakayan on sale for about 6K THB a few years ago. It has all Shimano parts. Still in great shape.

The Bangkok Craigslist is for all of Thailand.

I found my Chiang Mai bicycle there, but had to watch for a couple of months before one showed up.

There are at least three mountain bikes on TV classifieds at the moment, one of them mine :Phttp://classifieds.thaivisa.com/miscellaneous/miscellaneous-goods-for-sale/merida-matts-sub-10-mountain-bike-bicycle-211541.html
