Wireless Bridge/access Point

I am looking for one of these (or similar) in the Pattaya area:

I checked Tukcom yesterday, but no luck. Actually, I don't think any of the Thai shop owners really understood what I was looking for.

I have an ADSL+ 1 Port Wi-Fi Router (NT3BB-1PWN) which, due to the layout of the condo and to meet the wishes of the owner, has been mounted high above the front door. The single Ethernet port is, therefore, not readily available. I need to add two wired devices (located in another room) to the current wireless network. I had a earlier version of the D-Link when I lived in Korea and it worked well for the same situation.

Any help in locating a device that could meet this requirement would be greatly appreciated.

Almost any WiFi router or AP that you buy nowadays has the ability to do what you need. It just needs to be setup in the right way. That could be either as a "Wireless Bridge" or as a "Wireless Repeater" though different brands can sometimes use slightly different terminology for the same thing.

A wireless bridge is where both wifi devices are "bridged" to each other via wireless so that either device can then connect wired devices to the LAN ports. But in this mode you can't connect any wifi devices.

A wireless repeater will repeat the wifi signal of the first AP so that either device can connect both wired or wifi devices. However the connection speed is greatly reduced in this mode. Should be fine for normal internet use though.

All the wifi routers now can be configured as you require. What you do is buy as regular wifi router (say an adsl one). Best to buy a 4 port one. Then you configure it. You turn off the adls, and the dhcp (your existing one does that). You also need to reconfigure it to be on the same IP network (eg 192.168.0.x) as you existing router. Setup the Wifi (or you can disable it if you are happy to use the existing one). I mainly buy Tp-link routers and network cards;they are rock solid. Belkin are rubbish, dlink ok. Don't buy a non network company brand. Wireless n is awesome; the standard uses two antennas and its designed for streaming (eg video/voip). It also has twice the distance of g and is designed with clver signal technology to get round obstacles in the way.If your existing router is wireless g, disable that and use wireless n. Finally on you new router you plug one of the 4 ports into you existing router. Dont plugin the cable/dsl connector cause it won't work.

One other tip: if you decide to run wifi off both routers,then make sure they use different channels. You can get a wifi app for you phone to analize wifi signals around you. Ideally you want your wifi to run on a channel no one else is using. Channels are number 1-14. Most wifi routers sit on channel 6. Also wireless b can cause problems with g and n signals; almost like a jamming effect. Again switch to under utilised channels.

All this assumes you have the username and password for the 3BB ADSL+ 1 Port Wi-Fi Router (NT3BB-1PWN) router and that it can be easily re-configured.

Of just buy à cheap (in europ avond 10 euro) switch. No configuration wat so ever.
