My neighbours are burning their fields at this time, come and sit on my front door step, you will smell like a smoked sausage in about 30 seconds.

here they burn trash and ash is flying around. Often they burn a lot plastic with it.

I would invite 10 heavy smoker into my house in exchange if I could.

A friend of mine drained his swimming pool because he got tired of vacuuming out the ash and cleaning the filters so often. The ash clogged the filters quickly. Another friend is trying to talk him into refilling it and raising fish. Fish don't care about the ash. My friend doesn't like the idea of raising fish in his pool.

Leave Thailand for the people who are a little more flexible.

Ever considered following your own advice?

Yup. That is why I AM flexible. I don't like people smoking around me either, but I am in Thailand and accept it as part of the life style here. I don't like cars and trucks parking on narrow roads either, but I put up with it. I don't like the high import duties in Thailand, but I accept it. I don't like the two tier price system, but I accept it. I don't like the corrupt police system, but I put up with it. I hate the music scammers who do a con job on the bar owners, but I can't do anything about it. I just accept Thailand for what it is and just enjoy what it has to offer.

"I have to wash all my clothes, hair and body because everything stinks."

Most people anyhow change their clothes daily and take a shower.

Not all backpackers. sad.png

No they don't.

We could get into a tussle right here about the personal hygiene habits of Frenchmen, Indians, Americans and Thais, but we shan't go there.... whistling.gif

BS. Who dragged racial comments into this? I was talking for myself.

A good cigar or pipe tobacco smells great. More cigarette smokers should switch. Don't see why they smoke cigarettes when there's real tobacco to be had.

Even as an ex-smoker of nearly 27 years I couldn't agree with you more. nothing like a good cigar, some pipe smoke is aromatic as well.

You and I seem to think alike, rct99q. Canada has turned into a nanny state and there are some freedoms in Thailand that I envy when I'm back home. I've never smoked and I only drink in moderation. I've never taken drugs except those prescribed by a doctor, but I understand other people's addictions and I make allowances for them. I was watching the Superbowl in a bar that was SUPPOSED to be non-smoking, but at the table in front of me there were about 6 or 7 young American men smoking up a storm. I just put up with it although I felt like saying something. But, I was outnumbered by the smokers so I kept my yap shut. Management just ignored it. However, in many Chiang Mai bars the patrons are expected to step outside if they want a puff.

As I've mentioned many times before, there are many things that would frustrate me if I had to live permanently in Thailand, but as a 6 month guest in this country I really enjoy my time here. I'm just fortunate that I can have the best of both worlds if I don't go overboard with my spending. And, living in Thailand for the past 5 months has taught me how little I really need to enjoy myself.

I too live with these things (fulltime though). A while back at the GH a customer commented that she did not like people smoking in the garden areas and wanted it stopped. The owners put up some signs etc.. The lady went on that people around the table all had their heads down in their computers and it was a waste that people like her could not get a seat that had a good view while "these" people could sit anywhere watching their laptops.

Thought I would mention she was from California.

Reminds me of the song by the 5 man electrical band (or should that be 5 "person" electrical band) "Signs"

"Thank you, Lord, for thinkin' 'bout me. I'm alive and doin' fine."

I can't keep my pipe lit and even the smokers complain about my cigars.

Maybe need to work on your packing technique. Lots of youtube vids on the subject. Try a different baccy.

Some cigars do smell better than others but I find none of them really objectionable. Nowadays people just aren't used to the smell of cigars. They need more education! Good cigars are quite expensive in Thailand, unfortunately.

I do my very best to stay away from smokers but every day, and often more than once a day I seem to get a lung full of the filthy stink.

Smokers are always whining about their right to smoke but never have any consideration for the rights of others to breathe air without cigarette smoke.

Rather than non smokers telling me and others to stay away from them while they indulge in their filthy addiction they should stay away from others, after all smokers are in the minority.

And telling me traffic smoke is worse, what a lot of crap and anyway what can smokers smell?

I remember a great friend of mine when he gave up smoking many years ago saying to me in wonder "You know I can smell again"

What I find most amazing about smokers is their lack of respect, consideration and yes love for their own children that they smoke in front of them forcing them to breath their smoke.

Could this be how smoking is passed on?

The poor kids have been subjected to the smoke of a parent and grows up an addict or if not an addict then thinking that somehow smoking is normal adult behavior.

Not; its the behavior of a fool and a weak minded fool at that for they have not the will power to stop.

That rant is over, don't encourage me to give you more.

I'm with the OP. It is a filthy habit. If I'm in a place and someone lites up near me and its drifting in my direction I change tables or seats.

I just remembered a few years ago on a Chistmas Eve I was at a quiet bar and having a friendly coversation with the farang owner and his 3 staff, all smoking. I was midway down the bar and they were at one end and asked me to come join them. I declined as politly as I could explaining that I did not care for cigarette smoke. It went bad. I was accused of speaking no good and yelled at, told to leave and theatened with one of those metal hooks they use to pull down the roll up door. The woman kept beating the bar in front of me with it. I will never understand the reaction I got. It started with the girls (fat old ladies and no I never said that to them) but the owner (another old geezer) was happy to join in as well.

It is often not WHAT you say so much as HOW you say it. Just saying. I wasn't there but I've seen similar situations and comments.

I agree 100%! It infuriates me when I head in to my favourite bars to knock back beers and to buy young whores that some joker is sitting there smoking, like just ruins the romance.

And I resent you calling those girls whores. I know a few of those girls that you would have some serious problems if you called them whores to their faces. I guess being a key board warrior is pretty easy.

How do you manage to live in Thailand?

Maybe time to set sail for NZ and the nanny state.

Well the Thais dont seem to have any problems calling them exactly what they are.

Never seen a Thai get a problem for calling a girl what she is, I asume as you have been here as long as you have I dont need to give a Thai lesson and reel off the Thai words.

Ask a normal Thai to explain to you why, a "whore" who had her arm chopped off by a policeman in Kanchanaburi got what she deserved.

And you think that she deserved that? Enough said. I refuse to respond further to idiots who think they know everything and know nothing.
