What Dash Cam To Buy And Where

Featured Replies

Ive decided I need a dash cam.

I know nothing about dash cams, or where to buy them in Thailand. I am in Chiang Mai.

Do they wire directly into the battery or run off lighter socket? Do i need to keep feeding them video tapes?

Thanks

Not sure where to buy in Chiangmai, but I can tell you that

1) Yes they run off the cigarette lighter socket

2) Video tapes?!?!? LOL - welcome to the new millennium where video is now recorded digitally smile.png

Plug into the lighter socket, it comes on and starts recording when you turn on the ignition.

Most record on SD cards deleting old files when the card is full (cyclic recording) so you are always recording. Ours has an 'SOS' button which locks the current file so it won't get deleted, press it when you have a shunt.

You can buy lighter sockets that goes into 2 sockets or even 3 if needed. BigC has them among others

I had a 2/1 in my old car, one for charging the Garmin GPS and one for the camera.

It's just a pain in the arse with all the cables, don't looked good or tidy.

I've done a bit of research and will get the BlackVue DR400G-HD II and the Power Magic Pro to connect it to my car battery directly.

On your advice I looked at the BlackVue and agree it appears to be a good one. I found a thread on installation and configaration which has a lot of useful information.

I will also order one of these. Did you buy your unit over the internet or in Thailand?

There are a couple of suppliers in Thailand.. (can be found with an online search).

One of them, Seoul Motors (if I'm not mistaken) also does installation, so I'll buy it direct.

There is also an online supplier in Samui (I forget the name, but they appear to be advertising in a few places i.e. baht&sold)

I think its about 10,000 baht

I will also need the Magic pro (battery protection).

I need to install the Cams in two cars and will do so within next couple of weeks when I have time to sort it out.

Plenty of dashcams available also at Khlong Tom...

You can buy an HD DVR from Pantip in CM for 1,500 Baht that sticks on to windscreen. Records on SD card up to 32G. Connects to the power supply in the car. Sufficient for everyday use (unless you intend to make movies of all your journeys).

Just go buy one of those lighter socket 'power boards' and you'll also get some flashing LED's for free biggrin.png

Seriously though, just move your USB charger to the socket in the center armrest (assuming you still have a PJS).

Furthermore, if I may add, the PJS has a 12v socket in the rear, should you wish to put a second camera to view the rear...

KLONG TOM prices are exactly the same as anywhere else, right ?

Which one did you buy ?

Thanks.

I got mine from Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/140-Dual-Lens-Car-Dash-Camcorder-DVR-2-7-TFT-LCD-Video-Recorder-G-Sensor-GPS-/280967003503?isRelated=1

However, this Saturday, I saw the exact same one on sale at Khlong Tom center.

You find the dash cams also at Pantip (a bit everywhere). However, everywhere, you have an even better chance if you negotiate the price down.

Or just look at the advertising on this site. Laverda do one for 995b

Samsung reputable ? Yes, in marketing only !

so no reputable brands like samsung making these then?

Garmin (the GPS people) do them, expect to pay a premium price.

Can i use my android phone as a dash cam.. i use it for navigation already. Can i use sygic and record the road same time

The one for 9XX baht is bad quality. Not sharp (cant read license plates from cars in front around 10m anymore at daytime) like the more expensive ones and really bad at night as well.

If people wanna buy. Inbox me, 2 for 1000 baht lol.

Also be aware that most cars have tinted windows thus video footage will be less bright as well. Especially at night.

Just found daily roads andriod app.. now i just need a dock for the car and i can use that

  • 2 months later...

Hi,

Just fitted this camera.

Bought off Amazon for about 2500 baht, not the cheapest but not mega bucks either.

Comes with everything except an SD card, again cheap from Amazon for a 16Gb (enough I think).

Cable is nearly 3m long so easy to position cam where you want it, tucked the cable behind head lining and not noticeable at all.

From the driving position it does not distract, as it is mostly behind the rear view mirror. Only when the viewing screen is down can you notice it.

Will update about video quality after our road trip tomorrow.

Good find!

I just downloaded it and installed it before the daily school run using Mrs NL's motor. Pretty good!

This will be handy for when I use her car or get a rental (leave my cam installed in the pickup).

Thanks!

If you search Dash Cam on Google Play you'll notice there are many choices....
