Just read some stuff about it, bought some at Tops today to give it a try. they said 1 to 3 tea spoons, so lets go for 3.

opened the bottle, and it smelt like puke.......

downed it with a glass of water...... yuk........

In the greater scheme of things, why didn't ice cream, hamburgers and chocolate end up being health foods instead of this rank stuff........

Chin up.

p.s. anyone have good recommendations ?

just dilute the ACV with water and maybe add some lime juice.

also can mix with other flavors for a salad dressing

There is nothing special about taking it straight... low PH (acid) is bad for the teeth anyway

I drink it every day and it works wonders for my arthritis.

1 teaspoon of raw-unfiltered ACV, add honey to taste mixed with water, iced, cool or hot, your choice.

It works for me.

I had a pretty upset stomach today, went to the loo about 5x. great if you get constipation, but not something i suffer from.

when my stomach settles down, will try again after a meal instead of before and see the result

Definitely use the unfiltered kind. Much less harsh and better tasting as well. Dilute in LOTS of water. I use a straw to avoid contact with teeth, then RINSE WELL after drinking. Do NOT brush teeth soon after drinking the ACV and that actually will push the acid directly into the teeth. The brand here is Healthy Mate. It's expensive.

376 baht for a 965 ml bottle which lasts me a couple of months. I bought mine in Foodland.

To be honest I don't really know but I did a Google search and came up with this

http://www.ehow.co.uk/about_4761979_apple-cider-vinegar-benefits-gout.html

http://altmedicine.about.com/od/applecidervinegardiet/a/applecidervineg.htm

http://www.facebook.com/notes/braggs-apple-cider-vinegar/procedure-for-gout-home-remedies-using-braggs-apple-cider-vinegar/385634400435

and a few more like it.

I know it has worked for me.

There is no scientific evidence in support of most of the claims made for ACV as regards its systemic use (i.e. effects of drinking it). But it is harmless and some people swear by it. As long as you don't discontinue proven treatments in favor of it, nothing to lose by trying.

Many of the recommended topical uses have a clear scientific basis but plain vinegar would also do the same (e.g. for treatment of fungal infections) and is easier to come by. But again, if someone wants to go to teh extra trouble of getting ACV for that purpose, certainly no harm in it.

I tried the much-vaunted ACV and it didn't do a thing for me. I'll have balsamic on my salads, thank you.

You tried it how.

What dose, what regimen (empty stomach before meals or otherwise), what kind, for how many months?

Without more details, your report is hardly conclusive. Even with those details, it is just one person.

May be worth a try because I've read that gout is caused by the body being overly acidic. ACV is very acidic, BUT alkaline forming in the body. That is, the net result of taking it is alkaline. Baking soda is another way to promote alkalinity in the body but cannot be done for than about five days at a time because it messes with the acidic environment of the stomach. For every cup of coffee I drink I counter it with ACV in water (and juice from half a lime to mellow it out and manuka honey when I have it because it's the only kind of honey I can tolerate with my candida, and lately ascorbic acid and cayenne pepper which I found at the Vegetarian Society in Chiang Mai.)

Start slow. Just one tablespoon, and work up from there because it can be hard on the stomach. In another post in this thread I listed some ways to mellow it out - ceyenne pepper, lime juice, ascorbic acid, honey... Before I started my knees hurt when I tried to sit cross legged to meditate but within a week the pain was completely gone, usually.

Well, I can confirm one claimed benefit already - it makes u run to the Loo. Both my Mrs and Myself. My mrs took too much on first try ( told her to go slow ) and suffered the consequences.

That part of it certainly works

When I said it can't hurt, that referred to use of the actual liquid in dilute form and in moderation.

There have actually been documented reports of serious complications when used in excess (one of the problems with wildly exaggerated miracle claims -- it attracts desperate people) , and also linked to the so called ACV tablets sold in some places (which lab analysis has shown to often contain little or no ACV anyhow).

Gout is NOT caused by the body being overly acidic. The body's acid-base balance is well maintained in a very narrow, slightly alkaline range, by the lungs and kidneys and gout sufferers are no different in that regard.

Gout is caused by the formation of uric acid deposits in the body but this is not at all the same as the body being "acidic".

Taking ACV will not make the body any more or less acidic or alkaline. Nothing by mouth will do so. Only the pH of the GI tract (very briefly and very slightly) and the urine will change.

There is a lack of scientific research on the effects of ACV, if any, on gout. If it does have a beneficial effect, it is NOT because it in any way alters the body's acid-base balance.

One thing ACV supposedly is good for, is for sufferers of gallstones.

Apparently it makes your gall bladder pump out more bile, helping to get rid of the gallstones when they are still small/soft (they are actually made of cholesterol!).

Likely the running to the loo is a side effect of the higher then usual bile levels in your digestive tract.

The blood's acid-alkaline balance is maintained in a very narrow range, not the body's. If the blood ph goes outside (working from memory) 7.0 - 7.4 you're dead in minutes. If you have an acidic diet, lots of stress, and don't breath properly, you'll have lots of acidity in your body. So if your diet is bad (ingesting too much acid-forming food and not enough alkaline-forming food) the body will rob the bone marrow and other places of alkalinity, causing serious long-term problems. It's ironic that you mention the liver and kidneys because many allopathic gout medications actually damage them. Alkalizing the body relieves symptoms for many people without any of the dangerous side effects of big pharma 'solutions' such as:

  • Gastrointestinal upsets including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, decreased appetite

  • Rash, dizziness, headaches, drowsiness

  • Fluid retention

  • Shortness of breath

  • Kidney failure, liver failure, ulcers, prolonged bleeding after an injury.

When simply alkalizing can safely relieve symptoms long-term with none of the above dangers, and for pennies, who would choose otherwise unless out of ignorance, fear or mental incapacity? Science involves observation, and we as individuals can do that with ourselves. With a healthy diet and lifestyle, we can come to listen to our body and trust what it tells us. We can go to Iherb or drugstore.com or Amazon and read customer reviews of products, people who post out of a desire to help others rathen than to make money. We can search alternative websites such as Mercola's. Used judiciously, these sources can be a great help in taking control of one's health.

I'm sorry, but what you have written is simply untrue and makes no scientific sense.

it is not only the blood that is constantly maintained in a narrow, slightly alkaine pH rnage (7.35 - 7.45 to be exact) it is also the body's cells.

Whether or not the various remedies touted as working by acidifying or alkalyzing the body work has in many cases never been tested, but it is certain that if they do have any efficacy it is not because they modify the acidity of the body.

Indian Yogi's (yoga practioners) have long claimed they could alkalize their tissues by deep breathing. Beat's me

Not everybody breaths that well so it stands to reason it could be helped with various foods to speed the process up.

Another theory is that ACV is a descaling agent and that helps break down deposits in the joints. Ascetic acid is used in commercial/industrial applications for descaling. Or just cleaning your coffee pot for water deposits.

I guess the mechanism is a mystery. Does seem to help my joints quickly FWIW

SInce its so inexpensive worth a try. American Insurance companies pay out many millions each year for acupuncture to treat back pain but the mechanism and efficacy is hotly disputed. I guess it saves them money on claims so they go with it.

Back in 1995 I had an arthrosopy operation on my left knee and the surgeon told me to come back in 3 or 4 years for another unless I had a kneecap replacement.

I do hope he did not hold his breath as I haven't been back yet.

Meanwhile ove the last 10 years my knee has always ached sometimes bably enough for me to sit and put no weight on it.

I started taking ACV on the recommendation of my mate who has been taking it for years and has no arthritic pains at 76.

I started taking it mid December last year and now get the odd twinge but no permanent pain so in my case as they say

"It worked for me".

I took it for some months, quite a bit, 2 tablespoons 30 minutes before meals. Then for unrelated reasons I stopped doing that, and I felt the difference, mainly in less overall feeling of well being and subtle negative changes in digestion. So my anecdotal experience is I like the stuff and feel better using it. Now I am trying to take some only once a day, sometimes before meals as before, and sometimes IN the food (not heated).

Understood but in my view it's not hurting me. I am not taking it to cure any disease. I am taking it as one of a number of HEALTH PROMOTING things that I also do; for example regularly eating BROCCOLI. Considering my personal health history, I feel I am doing pretty well for what I have to work with (my genes are crap!).
